We had such a fantastic time at Root Connections, we went into the woods, made pictures out of the natural resources we found and picked vegetables!

Term 5 Week 1
Welcome back!
This week in Starlings we have started our new topic about plants.
Our drawing club tale has been Jack and the beanstalk, we drew Jack, his house and a way to make the cow look super cool to get more money for it!
In maths we have been thinking about 9 and 10, we have sorted different representations.
In science we have been learning the names of the different parts of plants.
Term 4
Term 4 Week 3 & 4
We have spent the last 2 weeks learning about hospitals and the people who work there. Our Drawing club book has been Zog and the Flying Doctors.
We loved STEM week. Bath Astronomers brought their pop up planetarium and we got to experience a trip to the International Space Station! Such a fantastic experience. We also met a vet and created our own exciting inventions.
In maths we have been learning about full and empty, filling containers with water, cubes and sand.
We have been on spring walks, and talked about the changing seasons, we even added blossom ton our class tree.
Term 4 Week 2
We have really enjoyed the sunshine this week. As part of understanding the world we have been looking for signs of spring outside.
In maths we have been measuring using objects such as cubes and thinking about longer and shorter.
Our topic this term is people who help us, so we have been learning about the post office and postal workers. Our Drawing club story has been The Jolly Postman.
We had a great world book day and enjoyed dressing up as characters and adjectives. Miss Plaskitt came and read us some stories too!

Children's Mental Health Week
Our week has been full of toast, well being activities and outdoor adventures!
Term 3 Weeks 2 and 3
We have continued our topic on habitats, thinking about the ocean and the animals that live there.
Our Drawing club book was the rainbow fish, we drew the fish and thought about what the other fish might give the Rainbow fish to say thank you for sharing his scales.
In maths we have been thinking about 1 more and 1 less through playing games and singing songs.
We have been painting our own aquarium and are creating rainbow fish to swim inside it.
We really enjoyed write dance this week where we made rainbows with our bodies and then on big paper using big arm movements.
We have been using our fine motor skills to bend and fold paper to make 3d sculptures. We hope you liked them!
Term 3 Week 1

This week we began our topic on habitats and as the weather has been so chilly, we started with polar habitats.
We also thought that we would investigate what would happen if we put different objects into water and left them outside over night

I am so proud of all of Starling class for performing at Somervale this week. Reception danced beautifully and made the audience smile.
We have also enjoyed baking gingerbread men and learning about the Christmas Pine.
We have enjoyed all of our Christmas events including our yummy Christmas Dinner with Christmas tree choc ices!
This last week we even had a jolly walk to the library to listen to some Christmas Stories.
Thank you for all of our lovely cards and gifts. We hope that you and your families have a wonderful break and we will see you all in January.
Term 2 Week 3
Our light and dark topic continued this week and our story was Oliver's wood. we have learned about nocturnal and diurnal animals.
We explored with torches in our dark cave where some nocturnal animals were hiding.
In phonics this week our new sounds were ch, sh, th and ng and we learned the common exception word 'she'.
We have focused on 4 and 5 this week and have been checking our understanding.
We looked at maps and thought about where we are in the world.
We also thought about the different materials that things are made of and what those materials are like.
Our drawing club book this week was The Colour Monster
Term 2 Week 2
Another jam packed week, topped off with our Children in Need ramble to Radstock Park and back. All the children were fantastic and showed our school rules of be safe, be kind and be your best!
Term 2 Week 1
We started our light and dark topic by focusing on bonfire night and fireworks. We have drawn fireworks, made firework sounds and talked about what we saw at fireworks displays.
The phonemes we have learned this week are 'j', 'v', 'w' and 'x' We have also learnt the common exception words "me". We have written new words using the graphemes into our writing books.
Our Drawing Club tale was Chicken Licken. We drew the nasty fox and then a way to protect us from him coming to gobble us up!
In our maths time we have been thinking about 4 and 5. We have been sorting groups of objects into 4s and 5s.
In PE we did gymnastics, we thought about pathways and balances.
In our wild learning this week we made leaf imprints onto clay
We also thought about remembrance day and decorated poppies for our own wreath.

Term 1 Week 5
We have been learning about Autumn this week, we explored outside and collected autumnal fallen leaves and conkers, we then spent time observing them and drawing them.
The phonemes we have learned this week are 'r', 'h', 'b', and 'f'. We have also learnt the common exception words "into" and "I". We have started to write some words by segmenting them into their individual phonemes.
Our Drawing Club book was Dear Zoo. We enjoyed drawing and writing magic code words for what we would feed the crocodile!
In our maths time we have been thinking about 1, 2 and 3. We have built towers, counted claps and actions and used five frames and counters.
In PE this week we focused on jumping in different ways, we used floor ladders, hoops and hurdles.
In art we carefully drew around shapes and coloured them in in different ways

Term 1 Week 3
We have been learning about our emotions this week, making faces with playdough and thinking about what can change our emotions. We also thought about our senses and went outside on a sound walk where we listened and identified what we could hear.
The phonemes we have learned this week are 'd', 'g', 'o', and 'c'. We have also learnt the common exception work "the". We have started to write some words by segmenting them into their individual phonemes.
Our Drawing Club Tale from the past this week came from The Magic Roundabout. We drew Zebedee and invented bubble machines!
In our maths time we have been thinking about size and weight, we sorted food for a picnic with the three bears and made estimations about what things would be heavier or lighter, before checking on the balance scales.
In PE this week we focused on following instructions and being able to copy our partners by being their shadows.
In art we thought about wavy lines and drew them using chalks.
Term 1 Week 2
We have continued to think about what makes us different this week. We have drawn our families and our houses, and we have talked about our likes and dislikes.
The phonemes we have learned this week are 't', 'p', 'i', 'n', and 'm'. We have begun to blend some of the phonemes together to read words! Have a go at home e.g. s-a-t, p-a-n, t-i-n.
In our maths time we have been sorting and grouping objects.
We have loved being at school all day and have enjoyed some art, PE and wild learning in the afternoons.
We started drawing club this week and our story was Not Now Bernard. We will tell you more about Drawing Club next week.
Term 1 Week 1
We have started the school year by thinking about what makes us unique. We have drawn self portraits and practised writing our names and made a 'helping hands' colourful display to see how even down to our finger tips, we are all different.
We have been learning how our day works, our different routines and where things belong in the classroom. We enjoyed a tour of the school and had a story in the library.
In phonics this week we have learned the phonemes 's' and 'a'.
To kick start our mathematical learning, we have been counting up to 30 and back from 10. We have sung counting songs and counted how many children are in the class.
To improve our gross and fine motor skills, we enjoyed our first Physical Friday. We enjoyed making big movements with our bodies and then transferring these to trays of foam using our fingers as part of Write Dance. We also untangle fiddly clips to get our fingers really working hard.
