The English Faculty at Welling School has a broad, diverse and exciting curriculum for you study during your 7 years with us. Below is an overview of what you can expect in your first year with us.

Oliver Twist and Oral storytelling

You will begin by reading Oliver Twist. You will study closely how Charles Dickens created interesting characters and how he used the setting of Victorian London to teach his readers a thing or two. This is then linked to the Victorian tradition of storytelling. You will have the chance to write your own exciting story and, using the power of your voice, bring it to life for others to hear.

A midsummer night's dream and poetry

After Christmas you will study a Shakespearean comedy about love, match making and mix ups. You will continue to build your understanding of Shakespeare's quirky language and explore how he uses the theme of love to make an audience laugh. Alongside this, you will develop your expertise of Shakespeare a bit more by reading a number of his sonnets.

A Modern novel: web of lies

This modern novel follows the life of Femi and Sade - Nigerian refugees who are living in London.  Femi has just started secondary school and finds himself tangled up with the wrong sorts of characters. Tackling modern day issues, this book gives you the chance to develop those essential analytical skills further so that you are ready to take on year 8!
