What is a devised play?
A devised play is a play where the script will be created by the actors. We will use initial rehearsal time to create scenes through prompts, improv, and some physical script writing. I will then take what the students have created and weave it into a narrative and cast based on how things have been going in rehearsal.
How does casting work?
Because of the nature of this project, we do not need to have any auditions! This also means that everyone who wants to be involved can be involved! I will be able to make a role for everyone. However, it does not mean that everyone's final roles will be of equal size in terms of stage time, and unfortunately this cannot be determined until we have actually created the script together.
What if I don't like my role after casting is complete? Can I drop out?
This is a highly collaborative effort. Students dropping out after casting is complete would severely impact the production as a whole, as the script is created with the entire cast in mind. Therefore, dropping out after casting is complete may result in not being cast again in future productions, including the fall musical when we do not cut students.
When are rehearsals?
Here is a draft of the rehearsal schedule.
What else do I need to know before signing up?
Because the script for the play will not be finalized until after April vacation, students will be expected to quickly learn and memorize their role. We will have approximately 5 rehearsals for students to memorize their lines, which comes down to about a week and a half. This may not be for everyone, and that's ok!
My goal is for students to go into this process prepared, focused, and excited, and to come out of this process feeling creatively fulfilled and that they've learned and stretched themselves as performers.
Ok, I'm in. How do I sign up?
Caregivers must fill out this contract for their actors. Then, everyone who has signed up should come to the first rehearsal on Monday, April 6 from 2:40-5:00pm.
I've got more questions. Who do I talk to?
Please reach out to Ms. Speed at speedk@wellesleyps.org with any questions!
