Wellesley requires all students to take eight (8) credits (4 terms or 2 semesters) worth of physical education classes or participate in an approved, College-sponsored co-curricular program, such as athletic teams, club sports, or other organizations. There is a maximum of 2-4 credits that can be earned through co-curricular activities.
It is very difficult to get out of the physical education requirement, but there are a few options.
For lower impact classes, there are mindfulness and beginning yoga classes as well as CPR and stretching classes.
ADR and PERA (Physical Education, Recreation, Athletics) will work with you to excuse absences and inform your instructor that you may have difficulty within your course.
If absences are a serious issue or courses will not work for you, there is an independent study option available. You must submit a proposal and acquire 42 hours to fulfill the PE requirement. Documentation of your health condition from either a doctor or Health Services is required.
However, an independent study can at most count for four (4) PE units or half of the PE requirement. Another semester's worth of credit will be required to graduate.
From PERA:
"Students with medical restrictions must meet with the College Health Services Staff to be placed on the Department’s Medical Restrictions List. Assistance in choosing appropriate courses is available from the Department Health Services Liaison. In cases where appropriate activities are not available in the curriculum, a Modified Independent Program may be arranged individually through the Physical Education Liaison. No student is exempt from the physical education requirement."
