How to Make a Video

There are several options for creating videos. This is a place to give you some ideas for different types of video recording and editing. Start at the top to decide which tool to use. Choose a template for planning your video, then scroll down for links to videos on how to use these tools.

WeVideo -

  • Record and edit videos or screencasts

  • Lots of editing tools: titles, transitions, audio

My VR Spot -

  • Record simple videos or screencasts

  • 60 min maximum

  • Videos automatically appear on the home page

  • Share with any teacher using the link

Canvas -

  • Record simple videos right in Canvas

  • No screencasting

  • No editing or downloading

  • Must be enabled by teacher

Screencastify -

  • Record simple videos or screencasts

  • No editing

  • Saves to Google Drive

  • 5 min maximum

  • Access using an extension

Flipgrid -

  • Record or upload short videos to a class discussion

  • No editing

  • See other students' videos and respond to them

  • App available for mobile devices

iMovie -

  • Edit, add titles, audio or green screen

  • Only available on Apple devices

  • Green screen effects

  • Files are stored on the device

Examples

  1. Go to My VR spot (live.myvrspot.com)

  2. Enter your school email address (first time only)

  3. Sign in with Google.

  4. Choose Create

  5. Choose Video Recorder or Screen Recorder

  6. Enable Camera and Choose Settings

  7. Click Start Recording and record your video

  8. Click Stop Recording

  9. Click Save Recording to My Account

  10. Enter any important info and click Update

  11. You can share this with teachers by copying the url

Canvas (requires teacher setup)

In a Canvas assignment, (if your teacher has enabled it)

  1. Click Submit Assignment

  2. Choose the Media tab

  3. Choose Record/Upload Media

  4. Click Start Recording

  5. Record your video

  6. Click Finish

  7. Type a name for your video and click Save

  8. Click Submit Assignment

How to submit a video for an assignment in Canvas.

  1. Click the Screencastify icon in your extensions.

  2. Choose Browser Tab, Desktop, or Webcam Only

  3. Turn on your microphone if you want to narrate

  4. Turn on Embed Webcam if you want a screencast with a video of you in the corner

  5. Click Record

  6. Record up to 5 minutes

  7. When done recording, click the icon again and click the stop button (square)

  8. Rename your recording

  9. Copy the google drive link to share it.

Flipgrid (requires teacher setup)

Quick Start for Students

This video shows students how to respond to Flipgrid Topics on a Chrome, Windows, or Mac computer.

This video shows students how to respond to a Flipgrid Topic by uploading a video.

This tool allows for students to record, upload, view, react and respond to each other’s short videos. Your teacher must invite you to respond to a Flipgrid Topic.

Follow your teacher's link or go to flipgrid.com

  1. Login with Google using your school email

  2. Read the prompt. (There may be a short video from your teacher to watch as well.)

  3. Click the green PLUS icon to record your response. (You may have to allow your camera and microphone.)

  4. Your teacher may enable editing tools, like simple filters, text and drawing.

  5. Take your selfie. (You can retake it if you don't like the first one.) This will be the cover image for your video and submit.

  6. If your teacher allow it, you can watch other's responses and record feedback for them.

iMovie

iMovie is an application for Mac, ipad, and any apple products. You can use it only when using an apple device that has the program installed: mac laptop, mac desktop or ipad.
