Students will bring an agenda home every night with a list of their homework for the day. Each night, the students are asked to get their homework checked by an adult, and then get their agenda signed to acknowledge that the homework was, indeed, completed/corrected appropriately. I tell the class that it is THEIR responsibility to do their homework, get it checked, and have an adult sign their agenda (it is NOT their parent/guardian's fault if it isn't signed) and there will be a consequence at school if it is not completed. (NOTE: Believe me, it won't be a harsh consequence, but just something to make them "remember" next time.) I really want to instill a sense of responsibility in them this year, and holding them accountable for homework is a HUGE step!
Homework will NOT be graded, as I feel its purpose is to reinforce concepts we have learned in class and to find out if additional help is needed.
I don't assign much homework; I feel that evenings are usually so crazy, and tons of homework simply makes everything so stressful. That said, students will usually be asked to study spelling words, practice math facts, read something, and often complete a math paper to go along with the lesson for the day. Even though it may seem like a lot, the spelling word practice, math fact practice, and reading may only take 15 minutes or so (and often the students can do this by themselves), and the math paper should only take them 5-10 minutes to complete, as well; so hopefully homework won't take too much of your family time in the evening. :)
