I want my students to relate this text to their life and the real world. I also want them to have fun.
To achieve both, we are talking about pop culture! Ancient Greek storytelling and the Iliad are forms of pop culture. Storytelling has given us the privilege to have stories like the Iliad, sharing culture and beliefs from 3,000 years ago. Through this passing of tales, we have things like hero archetypes today.
Hero archetypes have been passed down for years, and still remain the same today. How has our evolved form of storytelling: movies, remained true to hero archetypes?
Students in this lesson are challenged to share their ideas on this topic. They are also assigned group work that has them compare and contrast heroes in the Iliad to movies today.
