Music is a core subject in NYS and there are standards to meet at each level from PreK-12th Grade. A detailed version of the NYS Core Standards for Music can be found on the NYSED website here.
All lessons are carefully crafted to meet these standards at each grade level.
5th grade music begins with ukuleles! At the beginning of the year (after a brief review of some musical concepts), 5th grade students use the classroom ukuleles. They learn some basic chords and practice songs to perform in front of their classmates. This unit requires students to put together concepts they have learned throughout their years in the music program. Things like steady beat, melody, hand-eye coordination, rhythmic patterns and reading music all come into play when making music on the ukuleles. Learning a new instrument takes grit and determination and reinforces the power of "Yet"
5th Graders will also work on several projects throughout the year in music class. Students will have a choice in group projects including a composition project where they can write their own music, research projects where they can learn more about a music topic that interests them, or a music game project where they design and create their own music game for students to play!
We are starting with a review of reading notes and rhythms
We are excited to start working on our Ukulele unit!
Students will work each week on switching between chords and playing simple songs
