Music is a core subject in NYS and there are standards to meet at each level from PreK-12th Grade. A detailed version of the NYS Core Standards for Music can be found on the NYSED website here.
All lessons are carefully crafted to meet these standards at each grade level.
3rd grade music begins our journey with written music. We start learning about notes, beat values and even the musical staff. Students continue to sing and dance to various pieces of music, but with a greater emphasis on recognizing specific rhythmic patterns. This foundation of music literacy will help students as they move forward in their music education and begin playing on pitched instruments like the recorder (in 4th grade) and band instruments (in 5th grade). By creating a strong foundation of recognition of music notation, students will more easily be able to navigate the world of reading music.
Students will begin to notate their own compositions in music class. First rhythmic compositions and then melodic as well using Chrome Music lab and other resources. They will continue to explore using the classroom instruments and their voices to create sound and music.
