WELCOME STUDENTS

WYWLA Counseling Vision Statement:  The Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy student services team will inspire a community of college-ready, career-focused young women who are ready to learn, lead, and serve in a global society.  We will nurture and develop the social-emotional growth of our young women so that they can confidently and competently navigate the intricacies of balancing their school, family, and work lives.

WYWLA Counseling Mission Statement:  WYWLA’s comprehensive school counseling program will guide students through relevant and engaging educational opportunities that promote academic, career and social emotional growth.  Our school counselors will collaborate with administrators, school staff, parents and community partners to advocate for equity, access, and success for all students.

Meet your Counselors and School Psychologist

I am Katie di Carlo, and I serve as WYWLA's Dean of Students.  I work with students and parents in grades 9-13 on academic, personal and college/career counseling.  I have served as a school counselor in Cumberland and Wake County Public School Systems for 15 years.  I earned my BA in Psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill and my MS in Counselor Education from East Carolina University.  I consider it an honor and a pleasure to work with our OWLS at the first public single gender school in the state!

Please contact me at 919-508-9088 ext. 27129 or kdicarlo@wcpss.net with questions or to set up an appointment to meet.

My name is Kali Abu-Sharr, and I am the middle school counselor at WYWLA, supporting students in grades 6-8. I also am the 504 coordinator for all students, grades 6-13. This is my third year working in Wake County. I was previously a school counselor in Chatham County, NC.

I received my BA in History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After earning my Bachelor's degree, I received my Certificate to Teach English as a Foreign Language (CertTESOL) and taught English to students in Taiwan and Indonesia. I returned to UNC Chapel Hill to earn my MEd in School Counseling. GO HEELS!

I am passionate about helping students meet their full potential, and strive to help students academically, emotionally, and socially. Please do not hesitate to contact me! You may reach me at 919-508-9088 ext. 27130 or kabusharr@wcpss.net.

Hello, I’m Dr. Sulzbach and I’m WYWLA's school psychologist. I help support the students and teachers by problem-solving, directly and indirectly. I split my time between WYWLA and Pine Hollow Middle School. I love my work because every day is different and my tasks vary significantly, although the main ideas are improving academic achievement, promoting positive behavior and mental health, supporting diverse learners, creating positive school climates, strengthening family-school partnerships, and working to improve and monitor school and individual assessment and accountability.

On a personal note, I am a hippie from Woodstock, New York and have lived in NC since 2009, as a “half back” after a few years in Florida. I am an animal lover and have dogs and a horse, but I would have many more pets if it weren’t for my husband, Drew, who keeps me in check. I am always willing to help where possible or just listen, so please don’t hesitate to reach out.
