Enrichment Programs for Sophomores

North Carolina School of Science and Math (NCSSM) 

The North Carolina School of Science and Math is a public, residential high school for academically talented rising juniors and seniors with extensive study in the fields of math and science, along with integrated study of arts and humanities. NCSSM is now taking applications from sophomores who are interested in attending NCSSM Junior and Senior Year. NCSSM selects current sophomores with above average grades in 9th and 10th grade, enrollment in accelerated/challenging courses, leadership positions held, willing to be in the residential public school setting, and competitive SAT test results (take the SAT by January and have scores sent to NCSSM code: 2241). Parents and students are encouraged to register for a Fall Open House where students/parents can visit NCSSM and obtain more information. 

Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY) 

The North Carolina Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY) is a 3-day leadership program for approximately 200 rising high school juniors (CURRENT SOPHOMORES) held each June at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. HOBY Ambassadors have an opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills, learn about their personal leadership styles, and form an appreciation for community service.

Summer Ventures in Science and Math 

Summer Ventures in Science and Math is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented students who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics. The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in a residential setting for four weeks of intensive study during the summer. Students may apply online at
