Three MTAC members attended Winter Convergence, learning quite a lot of outside of the box ideas involving 21st century research
Media Coordinator attended a Makey Makey Workshop to see how a research projects can come alive! The purchase of a class set is being funded through the PTA.
Media Coordinator attended Curriculum and Instruction PLT sessions where makerspaces were modeled as a way to express student learning.
The beginnings of a makerspace is evolving in the Media Center giving students more options for presenting their research.
We can show our learning by creating a video game with Bloxels!
Students can do research on any topic and create their own video game (a cross between the original Super Mario and Oregon Trail). Students can create the character, create a storyline, and design the board and characters to teach about the topic in a fun way!
Much of our learning starts with a WONDER.
All students in 5th grade were given the opportunity to explore their own personal wonders during media. They were able to utilize student approved digital resources and the books in the media center to gather information. They were then able to "express" the newly learned information in many ways, including Google Slides, posters, and even song and dance.
After research, it teaches coding, organization of circuits, and problem solving.
After taking the opportunity to see how Makey Makey kits worked so well with research, we used Media Center funds to purchase a class kit to use in the Media Center. Fourth grade students will be the first to experiment with them for hands on experience with circuits and electricity, enhancing their science curriculum.
Fourth grade students collaborated on a Google Earth project to show our research of some landmarks of the American Revolution.
(EL Quarter 3 Connection)
Our 3rd graders researched "What is Snow?" during media and we compiled our answers on the green screen app.
Incorporating books written by our visiting author, we were turning dialogue from inside of speech bubbles into a story to increase our fluency when reading quotation marks.
Topics explored in ELA are displayed for students who have been inspired to learn more.
Students are encouraged to create their own personal book clubs during free choice time.
