The Green Book
In honor of Black History Month, Reedy Creek social studies teachers created a Green Book Tour of the “Overground Railroad” through the school building. As students tour through the school to each social studies classroom door in all grade levels, they learn the realities of segregation and what life was like in the South during the era of Jim Crow laws, as well as why the Green Book was created and how it was used. Stops along the tour focus on restaurants, barberships, churches, hotels, tailors, and more. Each door uses images, QR codes, and HP Reveal codes to give students a variety of learning opportunities. In addition to these visual and digital enhancements, our very own RCMMS Drama students act our roles at each door. For example, a drama student playing the tailor explains what experience a black person might have had at a tailor shop that was not listed in The Green Book. A related scene is included in the recent Oscar-winning movie, The Green Book, which is mentioned during the tour. This collaboration between our drama classes and social studies department is an interactive, multilayered learning experience that they will not soon forget.
