Over the course of the 18/19 academic year, our media program will prepare to lift check-out limits for the 2019-2020 school year so that all students have access to literature. To do so, we will attend professional development on the topic and meeting with other school librarians who have already achieved this goal at an elementary level. By the end of the school year, the library media program will have a plan in place for the new campus including policies for lost books and a reinvigorated self-circulation system.

Through attending professional learning opportunities with other school librarians such as Convergence and the Equity and Cultural Compentency PLT, we were able to reflect on our current circulation policies and their effect on our students who most need access to books. Although our school circulation policies were not highly restrictive, we felt the culture and language surrounding them didn't reflect a culture of access for all students.

With this in mind, we retooled our circulation policies to value and emphasize student responsibility and choice. Self check in and self check out require students to take ownership for their circulation. Likewise, emphasizing community service for lost books over a monetary fine refocuses the responsibility for the lost material to the students. Finally, lifting circulation limits allows students to determine independently how many books they feel they can be responsibility for and how many books they need to keep with them. Allowing students to visit on a flexible basis lets students reach books when they need them, rather than based on a weekly schedule.

As well. we will add better signage to help students understand that these are library books.

Over the course of the 18/19 academic year, our collection management plan will focus on including texts from diverse voices and material that reaches readers of all abilities. As the collection is refreshed with funds from the renovation, North Ridge will use the opening day collection as a benchmark to make sure these goals are met.

Throughout the year, we have added and updated our collection management plan. Examining the collection through Follett Titlewise analysis has made it clear that our collection needs both more titles that reflect our diverse students and titles appropriate for transitional readers. To accomplish this, we have created a purchasing list for the renovation funds that reflect these two goals.

With renovation funds, many texts will be added to the collection. The elementary coordinating teacher for libraries provided texts from the opening day collection to help build a purchase list. In the 2019-2020 school year, the remaining renovation funds will be spent and will include a focus on adding more lower level chapter books to reach all readers.
