The RHS Dance Department was first established in 2014, which was the 2nd year that RHS was open. The department is now in its 10th year and is growing rapidly.
Courses currently offered are Dance 1, Dance 2, Dance 3 Honors and Dance 4 Honors. Independent Study is also offered on an application basis once all 4 levels have been completed.
Students perform in a concert towards the end of each semester. Most classes perform at least 3 routines in each concert. Intermediate through Honors students are offered the chance to audition a student choreographed solo, duo, or trio to be in the concert.
In 2015 (the 2nd year of dance at RHS), dance students had the opportunity to perform a routine in the Wake County Arts Program, Pieces of Gold. Dance Company students collaborated with the Jazz Band and Chorus to perform "All that Jazz." The Dance Company also performed "Still I Rise", a spoken word piece by Maya Angelou, in the 2017 Pieces of Gold program and "Praying" with the RHS Choir in the 2020 Pieces of Gold program.
Since 2015, Dance Company has attended various dance conventions such as, Titans of Dance & Southeast Showdown. They have also competed numerous times in dance competitions.
The 2016-2017 school year was the first year that RHS inducted students into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts. Students who are Juniors or Seniors can apply for induction. Please check out the NHSDA section of this website for more information!
So many great things have happened in such a short amount of time and it is exciting to see what the future holds for this program!
