Glitter
You spent all day picking up fine glitter
On hands and knees with tweezers
Because you said a vacuum wouldn’t get them all
They fell off our sparkly dresses
Which we had promised we wouldn’t wear
You held us even then
With a smile on your wrinkled shallow face
But it glowed and shined nonetheless
You only ever smiled when I was a kid
I hear people say you loved us dear but I never say it much
I see you know in the ground
In the casket we laid down our glitter
Glitter over the coffin and on your sides
Putting you in our memory from those gold flakes
I laid a rose then sprinkled soft sparkles
Sparkles that shone telling new tales that I was too young to see
As a reminder that you were good
A great grandpa that I will never forget
I looked at you that day and saw your frail frame
I felt your power and poured in more glitter
I sat in service with tears on cheeks full of potential glitterÂ
Running down my young face, like yours was all those years ago
A flag was lowered and your casket closed
Along with the casket, my heart broke
I wish I had put more glitter in your life
Since you gave me so much sparkle
So I wish that glitter wasn’t my last goodbye
