Ms. Toiya C. Williams Dunbar

Ms. Toiya Williams Dunbar is a devoted teacher and musician. This begins her 18th year as an educator, and second year as the Choral Director at Ligon Magnet Middle School. Prior to her time at Ligon , Ms. Williams Dunbar served as the Director of Choirs and Bands at East Garner Magnet Middle School (EGMMS) for 16 years.
Ms. Williams Dunbar graduated from the Wake County Public School System, becoming an honors graduate of Pfeiffer University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education with a dual emphasis on vocal and instrumental studies on piano and clarinet.
Ms. Williams Dunbar believes in student leadership. This is evidenced by the leadership opportunities and class structures provided to students at each level of musical achievement. Students are afforded opportunities to lead rehearsals, manage music libraries, lead sectionals, create compositions for class members and lead conferences about their musical learnings. Students use technology to create digital portfolios, compositions and sites to demonstrate and enhance their learning, showing independence and creativity.
The choral ensembles at Ligon are saturated with a history of excellence. In addition to the Ligon Legacy of excellence, Ms. Williams Dunbar's parents both performed with the "Jubilee Singers" as part of the J.W. Ligon High School choirs.
Students of Ms. Williams Dunbar participate in various events. Students perform in Wake County Honors Ensembles, community events, North Carolina All-State Choirs and North Carolina Honors Chorus, as well as performing in various musical theatre productions. In addition to school opportunities, Ms. Williams Dunbar also teaches privately (voice, piano).
Ms. Williams Dunbar also is involved in supporting teachers as they continue learning. She currently serves as the WCPSS Staff Development Chair, a mentor to beginning teachers, and has served as a curriculum writer for WCPSS music and writing initiatives.
Outside of music, Ms. Williams Dunbar has served as the EGMMS Fine Arts Department Chair, a member of the EGMMS Instructional Leadership Team, a workshop instructor for the WCPSS Cross-Disciplinary Writing Continuum, and as a WCPSS curriculum writer for arts education. She has also served as the advisor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and as the Head Coach of the Lady Trojans basketball as well as the Assistant Coach of the Boys' Basketball teams at East Garner. She will be coaching the Ligon Girls' Basketball team this year.
In addition to teaching, Ms. Williams Dunbar sings with her church community and also continues to perform as a member of the North Carolina Master Chorale (NCMC), the resident chorus of the North Carolina Symphony, as a soprano in the Symphonic and Chamber Choirs. She currently serves as the soprano section leader and recently concluded her six year term as a member of the NCMC Board of Directors. Because of her passion for arts education, Ms. Williams Dunbar also served on the Board of Directors for the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County. To enhance professional learning and opportunities for students, Ms. Williams Dunbar is a member of the North Carolina Music Educators Association, The National Association for Music Education, The American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and subsequent NC ACDA. She truly believes in investing in the arts for her students and all community members.
