Hortons Creek is a part of the Positivity Project. This mindset is based off of positive psychology. We believe positive relationships are key to a happy life. Relationships are messy, it takes hard work to build and maintain healthy relationships. Our school supports students in this process by explicitly teaching and developing positive psychology's 24 character strengths.
The traits listed to the left are my character strengths according to a survey by the VIA Institute on Character. Knowing and reflecting on my strengths helps me to better navigate relationships with all people.
During the 2017-2018 school year we recognized the need to have more explicit instruction throughout the day on the P2 philosophy and character strengths. As a school, we developed signs to place throughout our building to reminds students how to use each character strength during the day. See below for examples of signs we created.
Teachers send Positive Postcards home to recognize students who display one of the 24 character strenghts.
Positivity Project in Goal Setting Conferences
Students set P2 goals with the help of teachers and parents that indicate which character strength they want to improve. They reflect on this and other character strengths weekly.
