Purpose: The HCES equity team seeks to create change by seeing inequities where they exist in our school, understand how these inequities impact our students and be invested partners in creating solutions.

2018-2019 Goals

To research and develop the skills to use protocols that create a brave space in all parts of our community (accountability tribes, PLT, Hawk Team, ETC.) to lead people in seeing, understanding, and interrupting inequities.
To research and implement strategies for supporting students in talking about race.

November 16 Equity Team Meeting

At our first equity team meeting, we used adaptive schools protocols to develop two action steps for the 2018-2019 school year.

Dec 13 Equity Team Meeting

In our second meeting, we began to learn the four agreements of the Courageous Conversation protocol and split up into two teams to intentionally insert race into upcoming lessons in the 5th and 2nd grade curriculum.

2018 Hortons Creek Race Talk Event

In 2018, Hortons Creek hosted a community event to get students and families engaged in conversations about race. The schedule below shows the sessions offered by teachers, support staff and parents. Both students and parents were encouraged to come to the event. Sessions were offered for adults only, students and their parents, and students only.
