My Professional Mission Statement
As an educator, it is my mission to build positive school communities where teachers and families work together to support students in understanding the world around them and finding and developing the talents within them so that they can become more than they thought they could be. I want to lead school communities in developing the tools to challenge patterns of power and show students that they have the power to make positive change in the world.
Inspiration for my mission statement comes from Oprah’s mission statement, Ken Robinson, and the Race Equity Institute
Sankofa is an African word originating in Ghana. The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” The symbol is based on a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards. It reminds us that the past serves as a guide for planning the future. It is this wisdom in learning from the past which ensures a strong future.

I am dedicated to "doing school differently" in order to create a space where every student is expected to learn, grow, and succeed while we eliminate the ability to predict achievement based on socioeconomic status, race, and ethnicity.

I learned about Sankofa at the Courageous Conversations conference in 2018 and hope that is continues to remind me and the educators I work with of the importance of looking at the past in order to do the hard work involved in creating a world we have not yet been able to achieve.
