Kingswood Elementary Values

- Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity - the 4Cs.
- Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships with a Strong Sense of Community!
Mission Statement of Kingswood School Library Media Program
We strive to encourage lifelong readers and love of literature and information while providing the school community with resources needed for success.
Information & Technology Essential Standards (ITES)
ITES represent the "must have" information and technology skills and knowledge that each student must have in order to achieve success at the next level. The standards are designed to be delivered by classroom teachers in all curricular areas and grade levels. As the ITES are taught throughout all classrooms and across all curricular areas, it is essential that classroom teachers collaborate with school library media coordinators and instructional technology facilitators in delivering this instruction. School library media coordinators and instructional technology facilitators should be active participants in grade level and/or curricular area planning groups as these teams analyze student data, identify learning goals, plan and deliver instruction, and assess student progress. From NC Department of Public Instruction.
SWIM
At Kingswood, we believe all students should Stay Safe, Work Hard, Be (Is) Kind and Respectful, and Manages Self. This vocabulary and concepts will be used for positive behavior reinforcement in the library.
Access to Resources and Services
Accessibility
Our library is prepared to accommodate all students. Our Developmentally Delayed Preschoolers, Mainstreamed Preschoolers, and Autistic 1 and Autistic 2 classes are on the weekly schedule to visit the library for a story and checkout.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
We aim full compliance with the ADA, requiring that no disabled person be denied the benefits of services, programs, or activities.
Our Goals:
- Take steps to ensure that communications with all patrons are effective.
- Make accommodations when needed to avoid discrimination
- Operate in a manner making all programs easily accessible to all patrons.
Hours of Operation
The library opens when the YMCA arrives at 7 AM. Until the Librarian arrives, staff members are welcome to check out books by turning on the Circulation Station and logging in using the directions on the display next to the monitor. Books can also be self-checked out all day by students and staff, as the librarian is there for assistance from 8:15 AM - 3:35 PM. Requests can be sent via email and delivered to classrooms as time permits.
Media and Technology Advisory Committee (MTAC)
With administration, faculty, parents, and chaired by the librarian, the MTAC will:
- Advocate for a collaborative environment
- Prioritize budget needs
- Facilitate long term plans for the media and technology programs
- Evaluate effectiveness of media and technology programs

Scheduling and Collaborative Lessons
All classes come to the library for a 40 minute class each week. Teachers are encouraged to work with the librarian to schedule additional time for collaborative lessons to build information literacy. Students who miss their scheduled library time or have other needs may contact the librarian for other opportunities to check out books.
Circulation Policies
Books
Students in Primary - Grade 2 may checkout one book per library visit until the 2nd semester. Then, the 2nd graders may check out 3 books, along with 3rd-5th graders. The loan period is two weeks but may be renewed once if brought to the library.
Faculty Checkouts limited to 100 items and their classroom Technology, AV Materials and Equipment may be checked out short term, or for the entire school year.
Lost and Damaged Books
Books should all be returned two weeks before school is out for the summer. If they are not returned, the lost book will follow their Destiny record throughout Wake County, even through High School, keeping students from graduating. Books may be returned, the exact item may be purchased and given to the library, or the amount of the original purchase may be paid to the school.
If a student withdraws from Kingswood, they should return all materials or pay for lost materials.
Overdues
Overdue notices will be sent home with each report card in an effort to have all books returned in a timely manner.
The Library Collection
Destiny Library System
Students and teachers can look for books, video, and AV and technology equipment online through the link to the library website. The catalog will show the status of the material, and the location and call number. Find Destiny at: https://wcpss.follettdestiny.com/common/welcome.jsp?site=145
Deselection
With a small library building, the collection must be continually evaluated in order to identify materials that have outlived their usefulness or for which no clear purpose is evident so these materials can be withdrawn from the collection. Input may be given from teachers and staff for assistance in identifying relevance of materials and removed materials may be recycled according to condition.
Criteria used for deselecting books from the Kingswood Collection:
- Age or obsolescence.
- Copies held by other Wake County Libraries for Interlibrariy loan.
- Coverage of the subject by other printed or electronic materials in the collection.
- Historical value and use.
- Number of copies in the collection.
- Physical condition.
- Value to the collection
Library Databases
For Research and Professional Development, students and staff can find our databases on our library website. https://sites.google.com/wcpss.net/kingswoodlibrarytech/ Passwords can be found in the Google Drive.
Request for Library Purchases
Because we strive to support the curricular needs of our staff, we provide a Library Wish List Google Document for teachers to submit title, author, and ISBN number for books that might benefit our students. The inclusion of any item in our collection does not mean that the school advocates or endorses the content of that item. We aim to provide a wide range of materials, inclusive to our community.
Reference Materials
Reference materials are to be used by students in the library media center. Teachers may borrow reference materials for use in the classroom when necessary.
Selection Criteria
To guide the selection of resources, the following criteria may be used:
- Appeal to patrons
- Contribution to diversity of collection
- Literary and Artistic excellence
- Recommendations by education professionals
- Reputation of author or illustrator
- Support of curriculum and educational goals
- Suitability for intended use
- Timeliness of materials
See below for a Request for Reconsideration of Materials form
