Transitioning to Middle School
Help students adapt to middle school and its associated issues, including SEL and academics, and know the resources available to them to help make the transition easier so that they can be successful in Middle school. Students will learn at least 3 ways to cope with and manage their SEL by changing their mindset to improve on or work through typical middle school challenges. Students will also know how to access and utilize at least 2 school personnel as resources (teachers, counselors, CIS coach, Social Worker, etc.) to help them develop strategies to cope with middle school challenges.Â
Grade 8
Quarter 1
Self-Awareness & Self-Advocacy
Enabling students to appropriately describe their abilities and needs, accept responsibility for their academic progress, and be able to advocate for self when needed. The objectives for this lesson are based on the following ASCA Mindset and Behaviors: Fostering the ability to be able to gather evidence and consider multiple perspectives to make informed decisions, demonstrating the ability to overcome barriers to learning and demonstrating advocacy skills, and the ability to assert oneself when necessary.
Major Clarity
Students prepare to transition to high school, it is only natural that they start focusing on their future career path. Our next lesson will be on Major Clarity. Students will set up an account and complete career assessments, and further use this tool in high school for additional exploration of careers. Students will compare postsecondary education options and requirements that reflect student interests, career goals, strengths, and abilities.
