PARENTS...
How can I support my student through Middle School?
1. Be the parent. Too often, as parents, we want to be their friend. Set limits and boundaries. Have realistic, age-appropriate consequences when those boundaries are crossed. ALWAYS LOVE AND GUIDE.
2. Instill good values and set realistic expectations for your child. It helps them develop good character.
3. Communicate with your student. Peer pressure competes with parental authority during these years. Ask open-ended questions when they are most likely to entertain a conversation. Listen closely to answers. You need to know, and they need to know you care.
4. Assure them that physical and emotional changes are part of the growing process and to be comfortable and beautiful in their skin
5. Value their opinion—they are striving for independence. When you see things differently, reason with them without judgment.
6. Set times to unplug. Know what Social Media sites your child is on. Discuss Netiquette, appropriate versus inappropriate postings, and possible consequences when they are violated.
7. Encourage your child always to give their best and nurture a love for learning. This is the one gift you can leave them that can’t be taken away.
8. Know your child’s friends. You will know much more about your child just being around his/her circle of friends.
