Single Subject Acceleration (SSA)
SSA Parent Information Presentation
Please make sure that you view this presentation and answer the questions below BEFORE you submit a request for SSA testing!
Ask yourself the following questions as you consider SSA testing for your child:
Have I had conversations about the need for skipping a whole grade level of content with my child’s teacher?
How is my child currently performing in the subject area where I might request acceleration?
Have I considered what SSA might look like and mean for my child, next year or in future grades?
Do all conversations and data indicate that my child has a need for skipping a year’s worth of content, in order to receive access to rigorous curriculum or challenging curriculum?

😶Please note the following:
How will students who qualify for SSA be served?
Schools will determine their own delivery of content. Instruction can be delivered through face-to-face instruction or online asynchronous (for specific grades only). For 5th graders taking sixth grade content or middle schoolers taking high school content, delivery will be through online asynchronous instruction. Students will not travel to another school/campus as services must be handled at the student’s assigned school.
How is a student's schedule affected when they participate in SSA?
By participating in SSA, parents need to be aware that changes in scheduling will occur, and could result in other off grade level activities (specials, lunch, recess). Schools will work to create a personalized schedule for students in SSA, needing to access the above grade-level curriculum.
Specials, such as Art, Music, and Physical Education, are required parts of the NC Standard Course of Study with Essential Standards in each area. To meet NC General Statutes of a comprehensive education, each student must attend specials even if they are participating in SSA.
