Brassfield Road Elementary School in Raleigh is a year round multi-track school that serves over 700 students. Students come with their classes weekly to our Learning Commons (Library) for Exploration. Students have either weekly Media or Guidance Lessons and normally have time to exchange their books during their class. Students learn how to check in and check out their books independently so they may come daily to exchange books with their teacher’s permission.

As a county, WCPSS started the Wake Forward initiative this year. Our MTAC committee took the Wake Forward Survey to assess our library media program's strengths and weaknesses. Using this data, we chose areas to improve based on both our weaknesses and the SIP focus of our school.

Over the past few years, MTAC members have worked on improving our outdated library book collection by using collection analysis, educating our staff and families on the current status of our collection, and seeking input from the staff on which areas to improve first. As a result of educating the community, the PTA chose to earmark all book fair profits to improve the library collection and a family donated $1,800 in 2017-18 and $1,500 in 2018-19 to the PTA to go directly to the library book collection. The administration also started setting aside $2,000 per year in school funds for library books. Our library book budget went from about $4,000 a year to averaging about $9,000 a year. We are steadily improving our collection through increased funds and increased input from the Brassfield community.
