Quarter 1
Quarter 1
The Positivity Project is a comprehensive, evidence-based positive character education curriculum serving 800+ PreK–12 schools across the United States and internationally. At the core of our work are positive psychology’s 24 character strengths, which teaches students actionable ways to build positive relationships in their lives. By teaching students to focus on character strengths—both in themselves and others—we create a culture of positivity that extends beyond the classroom. P2 helps students build self-awareness, empathy, and the ability to connect with others, leading to long-lasting improvements in school culture and individual student outcomes.
Letterland was created to teach phonics using a story-based approach. The story logic engages students leading to long term retention of concepts. What's more, Letterland is wonderfully multi-sensory. It activates every learning channel through music, actions, alliteration, movement, song, art, games and role-play.
In Quarter 1, students will review short and long vowel sounds in open and closed syllables, blends and digraphs, Magic E, common endings, and beginning long vowel teams.

Sound (Force & Motion)
By the end of the unit...
Students know that vibrating objects produce sound. Students know that sound can be described in terms of pitch, which may be higher or lower. Students know that the length of an air column determines if its pitch is high or low. Students know that the shorter the air column is, the higher the pitch is. Students also know that the longer the air column is, the lower the pitch.
Students know parts of the body vibrate in order to produce and receive sound. Our voices produce sound when air from the lungs passes over our vocal cords and makes them vibrate. The pitch and volume of the sounds humans can produce are changed by changing the properties of the vocal cords. Students know that sound waves are collected by the outer ear, which helps to funnel sound to the eardrum. The eardrum vibrates when sound waves hit it, and causes the tiny bones in the middle ear to vibrate as well. The vibrations move through the bones to the inner ear where the sounds are changed into a form that is understood by the brain.
The Principles of Democracy in the United States
In second grade, the focus of learning will shift to learning about America, as a part of the world and as a unique place within that world. Students will learn about America and how it fits into the global community. The intent of this course is that students will complete the second grade understanding that there are many factors that contribute to the development of our national identity.
As second grade students continue the study of Civics and Government, students will also learn how our democratic values and ideals guide the roles and responsibilities of our nation’s leaders.
