With 1400 reading students at Apex Friendship Middle School, hundreds of library books are always circulating. To get the books back on the shelves and create book displays that encourage reading, we have Library Assistants to work during Smart Block one day each week.
Arrival @ the Library!
Place your belongings neatly against the wall by the 799s.
Open your agenda and leave it on Mrs. Thrash’s desk, she’ll sign it.
Sign in on the day of the week you came, each day equals 30 minutes of service. You may only serve one day a week.
Look at the Library Duties Chart to decide where to work. Shelving books is always priority 1!
Watch the clock to be ready to bring carts back to the desk and clean up any projects you have started to be ready to go at 9:52 AM.

Alphabetize Books on the Cart by the last name of the author of the book.
You'll see shorter call numbers, but look for the full last name on the shelf.
Roll the cart to the Fiction area of the library so two volunteers can work together to put books in their correct location.

Because of their variation in size, these are more likely to fall over. Thye go in alphabetical order by call number. (Sometimes this is title, sometimes author.)
Our work is about precision, this means quality over quantity. You will get to know our collection and understand that all books need to be in their very exact location for students to find the book they need.

Use bookends to lift fallen books, pull books neatly to the front of the shelf.

Book Trailers - we love having ways to promote books! Write reviews or create Book Trailers for our Website!
iPad Maintenance - sometimes we'll have you open up and push the updates on our carts of iPads. This makes it easy for our carts to stay ready for checkout!
Display Ideas - if you think of a good group of books for one of our displays, let's talk about it! Students can make the signs and choose the books from the shelves!
Circulation Assistance - Look for students who might need help looking for books or checking out. Especially on Mondays!
