Welcome to 6th grade! I'm excited to be embarking on this adventure into 6th grade with you this year! I am entering my 4th year of teaching, all in 6th grade at Carroll. This year, I am serving as the Team Lead for Team Dream and for the 6th grade team. I graduated in 2020 from NC State University with my degree in Middle Grades Education in Language Arts and Social Studies (Go Wolfpack!).
I am passionate about conveying the importance of ELA as a lifetime skill used throughout your life for communication. I love reading and writing, and I love sharing that passion with my students each year. When I'm not reading, you can find me outside hiking, trying new restaurants, travelling, or spending time with my husband and our pets (3 cats + 1 dog).
Students should be reading their DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) books every day. This is a book that they choose to read, but it should be a physical book. They will have the opportunity to go to the Learning Commons (library) to check out books. Students will read weekly during SPRINT on Wednesdays, too! When students finish a book, they can fill out bit.ly/DEARcmms. At the end of each quarter, they can win prizes. The more they read, the better their chances of winning!
Use ELA with your student. Read to your student- It's so important to model reading whether it's a magazine, a book, a joke, a recipe, etc. Describe how you use ELA skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language) in your every day life.
Make sure students are studying vocabulary and practice work we do in class.
Check Canvas with your student. Ask them to walk you through each class. Have them show you their grades and the feedback their teachers are writing.
Help students be prompt and prepared each day. This looks like: having a charged laptop each day, getting a good night's sleep, showing up to school on time, completing homework/studying
