Before beginning these lessons you will have to sign up for a free IBM Blue Mix Account. The link below will take you to the site where you can do this. Having this account will allow you to sign in and keep track of which portions of the modules you have created. Sign-Up for IBM Cloud Account

Design Thinking & Chatbots for Good

These modules are the first section of the Chatbots for Good course created by IBM. The design thinking portion of this module will allow students to learn a new way to approach problem solving, which looks at all points of view surrounding the problem and encourages WOW! thinking. The Design Thinking Process can be applied during the remainder of the Chatbots for Good course as well as during any future problem solving challenges your club takes on. Because of this I would recommend exploring the Design Thinking portion of this program right after any introductory activities you complete with your club. Click on the graphic to the right to go to the Chatbots for Good course.

Time: 3 1-hour sessions

Additional Materials: Chart Paper, 8-10 pads of sticky notes, & markers. You will also need a problem scenario for the Design thinking portions of these modules. I have inserted a ready made one below.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

While the Design Thinking Process can be used to identify solutions to all of they UN SDGs, the Chatbots for Good Modules can be used to match up with UN SDG 4, which deals with Quality Education.

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

Specifically, the following section of this goal:

  • 4.4 By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship

IBM MODULES ON THE UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL GOALS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Using these modules from IBM will meet the following objectives:

  • Students will have an understanding of the design thinking process and will be able to implement it to analyze a problem in their school or community.
  • Students will use IBM modules to solve problems related to the UN SDGs.
  • Students will be able to apply their learning to a variety of scenarios related to STEM.

Design Thinking Problem #1

Putting the Design Thinking Process into Action

If you need a sample scenario to use with your students when practicing the design thinking process, this is the scenario we used with our students. It is helpful to have a scenario ready for them, because it lets them walk through the process rather than just look at the examples given in the modules.
