Science Lessons

Activity

This is a great website and lesson created by my friend and colleague Mrs. Jordan! This not only includes high energy songs and a great activity but it acts as a virtual field trip to the Bogue Sound on the coast of North Carolina. Through this lesson students learn about aquatic food chains, both in the Bogue Sound and the surrounding Salt Marshes. They then have an opportunity to create their own sea creature and food chain using the information they have learned.

Time: two 1-hour sessions

Additional Materials: Crafting supplies for students creating their animals and food chains. (i.e. construction paper, feathers, pipe cleaners, recycled items)

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

This lesson can be extended to match up with UN SDG 14 which deals with life above water.

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

Specifically, the following sections of this goal:

  • 14.1 By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution
  • 14.2 By 2020, sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, and take action for their restoration in order to achieve healthy and productive oceans
