Dear Student,
We might not have met yet, but I am excited to share this semester with you! This page includes portions of my syllabus. The syllabus is your guide to our class. It establishes our plan of action and expectations.
Your Instructor,
Heather
This is such an amazing class! You and I will learn SO MUCH. Maybe you think you know all there is to know about English grammar? Not so! Fascinating new lessons await!
Course Description
In ESL 161, we will be studying complex structures of English grammar. This is an intensive course: we will be moving very quickly through the material. Some of our topics include subject/verb inversion, reduced clauses, and complex verb phrases. In sum, we will be studying all of the rules PLUS the exceptions to the rules and when to use them. We'll give special attention to the appropriate use of the forms we study. This is the LAST grammar course you should ever need to take for your English! It is an important final step before entering college level classes with native English speakers.
My Approach to Teaching Advanced Grammar
Grammar can be studied as a “set of rules:” we can look at grammar like we look at mathematics or science. This type of study is not enough for us: we use grammar, part of language, as a living tool. It must be internalized and used in communication.
(quote from Diane Larson-Freeman, TESOL /ESL textbook author)
The way we learn grammar is by using it (correctly!). Therefore, I ask that you participate enthusiastically participation in class activities. Because grammar is important in all aspects of language, our in-class and homework activities will require you to practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking. To maximize your English-English interaction and to provide a variety of language input in your learning experience this semester, you will be asked to work with classmates who do not speak your native language. I will make sure our classroom is a safe, dynamic place for these interactions to occur.
