Course Description
In this course, students will move beyond minimal survival English in the areas of reading and writing. The reading portion focuses on building vocabulary as well as reading skills. The writing portion focuses on the production of sentences on basic topics with much guidance.
Student Learning Outcomes
In this course, students will learn to:
Read and understand simplified texts independently.
Identify the meaning of basic vocabulary words from the first 1000 words of the New General Service List, the most frequently used words in the English language.
Write a group of sentences in a paragraph format that show the ability to write complete sentences in English.
Grading for this class is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. This means that at the end of the semester, you will receive an “S” if you pass, or a “U” if you don’t pass.
To receive an “S”, you must have an average score of “70%” on the midterm and the final examinations in both reading and writing.
To receive an “S,” you must also have at least 70% of the work described below:
Vocabulary Quizzes 25%
Reading Quizzes 15%
Writing Quizzes 15%
Reading Reports (10 total) 20%
Homework 25%

Attendance is very important. You will not pass if you miss more than eight (8) hours – two weeks of class. If you miss a quiz due to an absence, it is your responsibility to contact me to make it up.
