Course Description
In this course, students will move beyond minimal survival English toward communication of daily living. This class is designed for students who have had some exposure to and/or instruction in English. Grammar and communicative competence are emphasized. This class can be taken concurrently with ESL 023 (High Beginning Reading and Writing) and ESL 025 (High Beginning Listening and Speaking).
Student Learning Outcomes
In this course, students will learn to:
Use appropriate verb tenses to describe activities, habitual actions, situations, and events.
Make well-formed questions and respond appropriately to questions about activities, habitual actions, situations, and events affirmatively and negatively.
Describe everyday life activities using a limited group of count and noncount nouns with appropriate number (singular, plural) and determiners.
Grading for this class is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. At the end of the semester, if you receive an “S,” you will be able to move on to the next level. If you receive a “U,” you will need to take ESL 024 again. To receive an “S,” you must have
1. an average score of 70% on the verb quizzes
AND
2. an average score of 70% on the three grammar tests.
AND
3. at least a 70% on a test showing that you can write questions and negative statements correctly.
Attendance is very important. You will not pass if you miss more than eight (8) hours – two weeks of class. If you miss a quiz due to an absence, it is your responsibility to contact me to make it up.
In addition to attendance, you should complete at least 36 homework exercises and 70% of the weekly journal assignments.
