The Governor's School of New Jersey is a tuition-free, residential opportunity that is being offered this upcoming summer. This is an excellent opportunity for high-achieving juniors who may be interested in a rigorous and demanding STEM summer residential academic program.
There will be two programs offered in the summer of 2019:
** Sciences at Drew University - The Governor's School in the Sciences broadens the scholars' appreciation and knowledge of science through exposure to a range of scientific topics and scientists. The program introduces scholars to a hands-on research experience in a student's area of interest through a series of courses, laboratories, projects, lectures, and other activities centered on math and science. Students benefit from working with professors in Drew University’s strong undergraduate science program, and they learn about possible career paths from the faculty and from some of New Jersey's leading industrial, governmental, and academic representatives
** Engineering and Technology at Rutgers University - An enrichment program of study in engineering and technology for students who possess outstanding skills and display unusual abilities and interests in these fields. The goal is to produce scholars to college-level topics across engineering disciplines using both coursework and hands-on experience while researching challenging and open-ended problems with peers who share their love for engineering and technology.

Now in its 10th year, the New England Center for Investigative Reporting helps students gain hands-on experience and develop personal networks to benefit them in college and beyond. Our Pre-College Summer Journalism Institute, based at the Boston University College of Communication, provides students an opportunity to improve their journalism skills and develop as storytellers.
Using the city of Boston as our news beat, students are assigned to newsrooms and work with award-winning journalists as their editors to cover different stories – entertainment, politics, sporting events, metro and investigations – in the Boston area. At the end of the two weeks, every student will have two to four articles to add to his or her professional portfolio.
Students have the option of living on campus to have the full Boston University Terrier life experience.
Our three, two-week workshops begin on June 25 and run through August 3. During each session, students will also attend guest lectures from experts and local journalists; visit historic sites and museums such as Fenway Park and the Museum of Fine Arts; participate in group community service; receive unofficial tours of local colleges, and more.

It is a pleasure to invite applicants to participate in the 2019 W.E.B. Du Bois Scholars Institute at Princeton University. Founded in the summer of 1988, the W.E.B. Du Bois Scholars Institute provides scholarship and leadership training for high-achieving youth. Each year for more than 29 years, the overall average SAT score for our W.E.B. DuBois Scholars has been significantly higher than national norms. Approximately 99 percent of the participants attend college and graduate. An overwhelming majority of them attend highly selective colleges and universities. Lastly, two alumni have been awarded Rhodes Scholarships for study at Oxford University.
While in residence at the Summer Institute, participants receive between four and five weeks of rigorous instruction in university-level courses taught by university professors, post-doctoral fellows, and doctoral candidates from top research universities and institutions throughout the country. The Institute aims to sharpen students’ research and quantitative analysis skills, as well as writing, verbal, and critical reading skills through a diversity of high-level academic courses. Students entering the Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth grades in the fall of 2019 are eligible to participate. Please note that scholarship amounts (maximum $1,200) are only available for students entering tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades by fall of 2019. Early and prompt submission of materials is highly recommended.
The W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute provides leadership, scholarship, community service, and entrepreneur training along with exposure to science and technology for high-achieving youth attending middle and secondary schools. It was founded with an aim to develop a cadre of brilliant leaders/activist scholars with a commitment to contributing their talents for the betterment of others by solving major problems facing our society. The scholars of the Institute are encouraged to be leaders/activist that define personal success in terms of the impact of their talents on the well-being of others, especially members of underserved communities.
Each summer at Princeton University, we convene a body of talented middle and high school students from around the country, and in some cases throughout the world. While all students take courses that enhance their aforementioned skills, the Institute offers a unique system of Academies, allowing each individual to pursue a specific course of study- from Engineering to Social Science-during the summer. Not only does the Institute prepare students academically and socially for college, but it also provides them tools to navigate bureaucracies in institutions of higher learning and have a positive impact upon the challenging political, social, and economic landscape of the times.

Research shows the importance of summer learning:
"On average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of learning in math over the summer — and teachers have to give up weeks of class time, or more, to make up for that loss." (link) "High-quality summer enrichment programs can help schools address summer learning loss. The Afterschool Alliance (2010) describes well-designed summer learning programs as those that increase achievement, enhance motivation for and engagement in learning, and develop and nurture new skills and talents." It goes beyond just the craft of designing, but also into the business of making a living in fashion. The program is focused on designing and developing different product categories for established brands. Students will discover jobs that they didn’t even know existed such as trend forecaster, technical designer, stylist, product developer, brand manager and more. Working as a collaborative team, students will stimulate and engage their creativity through developing a product line for an existing company, consistent with its brand profile. There will be a variety of creative hands-on projects in various workshops, developed for different skill levels. The projects incorporate branding, market research, trend forecasting, creative design, mood boards, theme concepts, color palettes, flat sketching, fabrics, trims and details to create a cohesive collection for a specific target consumer and season.
