THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
In 2017 the Wayne Schools Board of Education approved a 3.65 GPA requirement for eligibility to apply to the National Honor Society for both Wayne Hills High School and Wayne Valley High School. Wayne Valley students with a minimum 3.65 GPA at the end of their sophomore year are invited at the beginning of their junior year to go through an application process for membership in the Wayne Valley chapter of the National Honor Society. Eligibility is the first step in the induction process and while it is a high honor to be inducted into the National Honor Society, a student’s minimum GPA alone does not guarantee acceptance. Applications are distributed through the student’s homeroom in September of their junior year. Completed applications are then reviewed thoroughly by the Principal’s committee.
The National Honor Society is founded on four pillars: service, character, leadership and scholarship. A student’s GPA is the determining factor for the scholarship pillar. The application asks the student to submit evidence of the additional three pillars through questions and proof of activities and prior community service. In addition, a letter of recommendation will also be required from an individual who will be able to speak to how the student exemplifies leadership. This individual may NOT be a relative or a Wayne Valley teacher, but may be a coach or advisor. The letter is submitted with rest of the application in a sealed envelope. Any questions regarding the application process may be addressed to the WVNHS advisor, Alison Solomon: asolomon@wayneschools.com.
