My Sister's Keeper; A Closer Look

There’s no denying that this novel is a classic. But is it truly worth the hype? Read on and find out. To start off, it’s realistic fiction, which is one of my favorites. But realistic fiction can take many paths. This book is particularly interesting because it presents a Solomon’s choice. Let me explain it to you. Imagine you are the mother of a beautiful family with two children. Suddenly you find out your oldest has leukemia. There’s a chance to save her but it means that you would have to genetically modify a new child altogether. That child would then give everything needed for your firstborn. You would choose to save your first child right? Now imagine you’re the child created to save your sibling. You know you were only created to help somebody else. You don’t have a choice in the matter either. What would you choose now, after thinking about both of these perspectives? This novel takes a rather peculiar idea and transforms it into the book of the century.
Anna, short for Andromeda, was born to help her sister Kate with leukemia. The novel itself revolves around one main event: Anna sues her parents and finally stands up for herself. Her parents haven’t realized it was against Anna’s wishes to help Kate. It’s such a hard situation for a family to be put in. The book tells the story of exactly that. It also includes other characters and details that I found amusing. There’s Taylor Ambrose, Kate’s first love who dies from cancer. Jesse the brother of both Kate and Anna who has been pushed off to the side by his family. In a final analysis of the entire book, it’s an amazing story that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

This book has quickly become one of my favorites, with its abundance of literary signposts and devices, it’s an educational read. Additionally, it’s deeply meaningful and resonates with the reader well. The main idea of the book is that everybody deserves a second chance. I connect with this on another level plainly because of the fact that I have a little sister. I should further explain; when my sister was first introduced to this world, she knew who she wanted around her. (Anybody but me) Every time I would try to get close to her, she would kick and scream and try to bite me. Which was weird because she was a relatively calm baby who let anyone hold her. This lasted until she was almost four. I understand now that she was just a little kid and it wasn’t her fault but that’s hard for a three-four-year-old Janavi to wrap her little head around. As my sister got older, we grew closer and one day I guess we just woke up and decided to collectively stop hating each other.
The protagonist in this book is named Cole Mathews and he’s a juvenile delinquent who struggles with anger. He’s made a lot of mistakes in his life but the last straw was when he physically assaulted a peer (Peter), bashing his head into the ground as a cherry on top. He’s given an awesome opportunity to avoid being imprisoned by Circle Justice. The deal is that he willingly banishes himself for a year on a remote Alaskan Island. But to Cole, this is all just a game. He has no intentions of changing. He makes that very clear when he burns down the shelter that was made for him and tries to escape the island by swimming. This ends in tragedy as Cole is mauled by a Spirit Bear. Which is odd because Spirit bears live nowhere near where he was mauled. He’s on the verge of death for a while when he has a breakthrough. He wants to live. From that point on he does his best to survive.
He gets a second chance after he’s rescued to go back to the island but this time have to do everything himself. He will have to build his shelter etc. He uses this privilege wisely, taking advantage of the opportunity presented to him. Cole has changed even before he’s offered a second chance and it’s clearly portrayed when the author states, “Beginning today he would tell the truth. His words would become his only proof.” He has immensely wise mentors Garvey and Edwin to guide him. They give him great advice throughout the entire book but there are a few that appealed to me personally. Like when Edwin said, “ ‘A person is never done being mad. Anger is a memory never forgotten. You only tame it.’ “ You can tell that he has been through everything that Cole is going through because he has. Both Garvey and Edwin were in trouble with the law when they were young, that’s a big part of why they care and help Cole so much.
To give the readers closure, the author has the boy who Cole assaulted come to the island and coexist with Cole. Peter is doing horrible by this point, he has tried to take his own life multiple times. Obviously, Garvey is there to supervise them both. Peter is terrified of Cole but masks it as hatred at first. Then, he truly does start to resent Cole, shoving him and eventually beating him up. Fortunately, Cole doesn’t fight back and just takes it when Peter beats him. This leads them to make up on the way back to the cabin. The book has a genius ending as well. It’s a conversation between Peter and Cole as Peter teaches Cole how to carve. The last line is Cole saying he’s a slow learner while smiling and nodding. There’s so much beauty in this moment because, without any context, it just sounds like a pair of friends chatting it up. It shows how far Cole and Peter both have come since the beginning of the book. This was one of those books that made me physically ache when I finished it because I couldn’t have the feeling of reading it for the first time again. I know you’ll love this book too!
A concise book review
By Defne Kocabasoglu
Don't confuse the cover with the genre-it’s not a scary book, but the cover might scare people. It is a mystery novel, not a horror novel.
Josie, the main character, used to live in the city with her mother and little sister, Annie. But when Josie's mother lost her job, they had to move to the countryside and live with their grandmother. Josie had to transfer schools, and befriended a popular girl, Vanessa. but Josie doesn’t know how much danger she’s in. She's told by her grandmother to never, ever go by the house in the woods. But when Vanessa pressures Josie to go into the woods, she complacently ignores her grandmother's decree, and heads into the woods, to the house that calls her name. Josie doesn't know how much danger she's in..
This is an amazing book. 4.5/5 stars. Middle and high schoolers would most likely read this cover-to-cover. Stay tuned for more reviews from the AW Bugle...

Bored of watching the same movies again and again? Do you have the adrenaline to watch an exciting new movie? Then Inside Out 2 is the right choice for you. It has thrills and fun laughs and has a few sentimental incidents. If you are blown away by this so far, you should read this article. Once you read it, you will start watching the entire movie. Start to finish.
WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
First of all is the summary. Can’t do a movie review without knowing what the movie is about. The movie Inside Out 2 is about the further adventures of Riley and her emotions as she undergoes puberty and new emotions start to come to her headquarters and how Joy can save Riley from being manipulated by these new emotions. The main antagonist is Anxiety, the new emotion that takes over Riley and tr but fails in doing so. The protagonists are Joy and Riley who have obstacles in their way to stop Anxiety, the villain. That’s what’s so exciting about this new movie: it has a villain. The first “Inside Out” had no villain and was a bit dull and boring.
My rating for this movie would be 9.5/10. This movie caught my attention because the effectiveness of the emotions made the movie more interesting. The humor supplemented by these characters were amazing. An epitome of humor in the movie was the emotion Ennui, also known as boredom, having a French accent makes her more humorous. In addition, her monotone makes her sound like a person with no soul, which makes her really funny.
It’s not just fun and laughs that make this movie awesome. Action and adventure makes this exciting too.
Not only is it exciting and funny, the movie is so sentimental too. If you try not to cry during the movie, you will most definitely lose. There are many emotional parts of this movie. Why I put my -0.5 on my rating was because I was hoping to see Riley seeing her emotions for the first time. What was her reaction? What would she say? Maybe in “Inside Out 3.”
I know you have been waiting for this. You’ve heard the summary and my review. But I can’t be the only one to judge. Now is the time for the student review. The student I interviewed for “Inside Out 2” is Manav Parmar, a 7th grader that attends Anthony Wayne Middle School, and a co-editor of our amazing Bugle. Here is what he said about the movie. He liked Riley’s development and how she evolved, and showed how puberty sucks, especially emotionally. The movie was more pragmatic too. He liked the Sense of Self in the movie which is basically Riley’s confidence in herself and what she believes in herself. He was amused by Ennui’s usage of her monotonous French accent and how it added to her character. He liked how colorful the emotions were. After all of these questions, I asked him what his rating was on the movie on a scale from 1 to 10. He said, “10.” He loved the movie very much.
That concludes this newsletter’s movie review on the movie “Inside Out 2.” I hope you liked this movie and I really recommend you watch it. You can find it on Prime Video, YouTube, Plex, and many other streaming services. But out of all of them, I would recommend watching them on Disney+ because it has good quality on the screen and you just have to pay for Disney+ to watch it. The quote for the movie review that caught my attention was “You can’t just bottle us up!” said by Joy to Anxiety. So watch “Inside Out 2” and give me your thoughts. I am telling you, the movie will blow your mind.

Are you in for a thriller? Do you like medical shows? Do you like binge-watching shows full of suspense and mystery? Then “Doctor Odyssey” is the right choice for you. It has almost every single genre: action, mystery, thriller, comedy, drama, and even romance. This show is so superior, people binge-watch it everyday. Even though only a few episodes are available to watch. So let's get this review started.
The summary of this spine-chilling tv show is about the Odyssey, a cruise ship on southern waters close to the Caribbean. The show is mainly about the medical team led by Dr. Max Bankman and his assistants: Avery and Tristan. They are a small but mighty medical team and it is their job to keep everyone alive on the ship. How they do it is the story of this show.
My review on this TV show is a 9.7/10. This show got my attention because it had so many mysteries and so many medical emergencies that could have been fatal. But the mighty medical team were there to save the day! However, this show was really emotional and sentimental because of certain scenes that would spoil this review.
If you wish to watch this show, beware: it is rated TV-14. This show should be rated TV-MA because of adult scenes and inappropriate medical emergencies such as nose falling off faces. Be sure to get parental permission before you watch this. And if they give you their assent, then I suggest you watch it on Hulu or Disney+. Thank you, and I hope you like the show!

Do you like nature? Animals? Have you ever wondered about the secret lives of these animals? How about tigers? If you’ve wondered about them, then “Disneynature’s Tiger" is the right documentary for you. It is full of suspense, thrills, and laughs. Once you read this whole review, you will watch the entire documentary about these majestic beasts from start to finish.
First is the summary. The summary of this brilliant documentary is about the challenges or obstacles on how Ambar, a mother tiger, raises her four tiger cubs. The villain is Shankar who is a dynamic character. Shankar wants to kill Ambar’s cubs in order for him to mate with Ambar. The sequel to the movie is “Tigers on the Rise” which is the “behind the scenes” on “Disneynature’s Tiger” and how the people in India are trying to save them from extinction.
For this article, sadly, I am not going to give a student review. But I will give my review. I would give this review a 9/10 because this movie has so much suspense and a smidgeon of humor. However, I was crying during the middle of the documentary for a certain scene that would spoil this review.
If you want to watch this documentary, the only place is on Disney+, which has good quality. There is only one person in the cast, the narrator, which is Priyanka Chopra. She narrates the story of these tigers so perfectly, you could depict it in your brain without watching the documentary. If you want to watch this documentary, you must subscribe to Disney+. This documentary is rated PG, so make sure to watch this with a parent. Thank you, and have fun watching this.
