Mr. Zungoli’s Prequel
Attention AW students and staff! We have a VERY important announcement to share with you all today! Mr. Zungoli has a… BIRTHDAY! It’s on March 8th so make sure to buy him something. He said last year that he can rock a white fox hoodie. So buy him that. It’s important to get his parent’s a present on his birthday too since he wouldn’t be teaching us if he didn’t have a birthday. And he wouldn’t have a birthday without his parents, so… BE GRATEFUL! Mr. Zungoli has a very interesting story that he wants the whole world to know. So make sure to spread his tale like you all spread rumors.
The Teacher’s Tale
As you all know Mr. Zungoli, just one of the many teachers here at AW, is a phys ed and health teacher for seventh graders here at AW. However, do you know his story as to how and why he became a phys ed teacher at AWMS? Well, if not then you’re about to find out. It all began when he was working at Wayne Hills for half a school year. He also worked at Wayne Valley for half a school year. After traveling between these two amazing high schools, he decided it was time for a change and chose to teach at AW, and has been for two and a half school years. Mr. Zungoli loved his phys ed class when he was in school. He also loves sports. With his courage and passion for gym class and sports, he felt inspired to share it with other students right in this very school. Mr. Zungoli used to coach lacrosse. Right now he coaches a wrestling team. Whether the team is successful or not is unidentified, only Mr. Zungoli will know. Now you all know the tale of how Mr. Zungoli ended up teaching at our school, and you can pass it down through the generations.
Getting in Zungoli’s Zone
Mr. Zungoli is a very chill guy, but there is a whole other side of him that many of us didn’t know until now. Mr. Zungoli’s favorite hobbies are spending time with family and friends on the weekends, playing sports like basketball or football with friends, and he likes to watch TV. I’m sure he never misses an episode of Spongebob. Mr. Zungoli was born here in the U.S, but he has a long family history from Italy, as well as a bit of history in Ireland. Mr. Zungoli has one younger brother, and is currently taking care of 3 cats. His favorite movie is the Goodwill Hunting, and his favorite show is The Office. His favorite color is red, his favorite instrument to listen to is the guitar when he isn’t playing his air guitar. His favorite season is summer, and his favorite food is having a delicious chicken sandwich. Christmas is considered to be his favorite holiday, but don’t worry he also likes Halloween and Thanksgiving (even though he doesn’t like turkey). If he could go anywhere he would go to Italy because of the beautiful culture and because it would be a new place to explore. He continuously wishes on a star to see it someday. BONUS QUESTION: Why doesn’t Mr. Zungoli like turkeys? Well the answer to this question is… it’s not that he doesn’t like the animal itself, but he doesn’t like the taste of turkey and he feels the same way about ham because he is a very picky eater. So I guess he doesn’t only like to wish on a star to visit Italy, he also wishes on a star to have a better meal option on Thanksgiving. Then and only then would he be thankful.

On September 20th, in the afternoon, most of the school was quiet. The classes were empty, the hallways were clear. There wasn’t a teacher in sight teaching or student learning. Where was everyone? Down the long hallway towards the gym, you could hear screaming, whooping and clapping! All students and staff were eagerly awaiting for their homeroom to be called so they could go up and be sorted into their houses. Cheers and screams were heard from the crowds, mixed looks of happiness, relief and nerves we on kids faces, and the faculty and staff were decked out in their house colors representing the leadership of their new team. Did you see them? DIdn’t they look great? Who was your favorite?
The students were sorted into 1 of 4 houses, a new, fun activity that was started this year and will continue throughout the year. Houses will earn points during the year by participating in various competitions. Each house has a name, color, meaning, and symbol. Which house are you? Each person, staff or student is encouraged to bring their best sportsmanship, fun attitude and team pizzazz to each competition. So go crazy and get decked out!!!! We will be learning more about the houses and the next competition soon!!!!!!

With every new school year comes new friends, old friends and change. We all get excited in August waiting to find out our schedules and who is in our classes. There is a sadness and panicked feeling when your close friends aren’t in your classes and even more when you find out that your friends are in classes together without you. This is as much a new opportunity as starting middle school or trying something new. Try and make new friends. Our friends were all once strangers that became acquaintances and now are friends. 8th graders were once new 6th graders and us 6th graders were top of the school running 5th grade last year. It changes. Some things for the better, some not what we plan. Friends drift apart because they aren’t in the same classes or hanging with the same people. Sports, activities, even clubs can have some people drift apart and also create new relationships. Keep yourself on good terms with all friends as you never know when the friends you drifted from end up in your orbit again. Use this opportunity to look next to you and say hi to a new friend. We are at our homeroom tables for lunch, so we can use that time to speak to someone new. Look up and smile in the hallway and say hi passing someone, or to your locker neighbors. We are all in it together and the new face you talk to might be the friend you are looking for or need. Be kind to all. Everyone is adjusting and trying. It's easier to be kind than not. If you see someone left out, include them. Invite people to join you. Try a new club. Giver yourself every opportunity and experience. Tell a person that they can sit with you. Be friends to all and enemies to none.
