Scoring Big with Books: Our ReadBowl Experience!
This year, our class had the incredible opportunity to participate in ReadBowl, a nationwide reading competition created by former NFL player Malcolm Mitchell. Designed to inspire young readers, ReadBowl challenges students to log their reading minutes and compete alongside peers from across the country. Not only did this experience help strengthen our reading stamina, but it also ignited a competitive spirit in our classroom, motivating students to push themselves further each day.
One of the most exciting parts of the competition was the connection to professional athletes. Malcolm Mitchell, a Super Bowl champion and an advocate for literacy, shared his own journey of discovering the power of reading. His story resonated with my students, showing them that reading is a skill that can open doors both on and off the field. Adding to the excitement, the Detroit Red Wings also joined in on the literacy fun, reinforcing the idea that reading is a game-changer in every field—not just in sports!
Throughout ReadBowl, I watched my students develop stronger reading habits, build confidence, and take ownership of their learning. They eagerly logged their minutes, recommended books to each other, and cheered each other on—proving that reading is truly a team sport.
This experience has been a game-changer in our classroom, and I’m beyond proud of the dedication and enthusiasm my students showed. We’re already looking forward to next year’s ReadBowl, ready to set new records and keep scoring big with books!
