Charting My Growth: The Courses That Defined My Learning

Welcome to my annotated transcript! This page showcases the ten courses I have completed as part of my master's degree - Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) through Michigan State University's (MSU) Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education (CEP) department. Each course has contributed to my growth as a learner, deepening my understanding of education, leadership, and student engagement. Through research, reflection, and hands-on application, I have expanded my skills and perspectives, preparing me to better support my students and continuously evolve as an educator. Each of these courses has been a stepping stone in my professional growth, equipping me with the knowledge and strategies to foster creativity, critical thinking, and engagement in my classroom.

Fall 2023

CEP 803A Assessment of Students with Mild Disabilities

Sarah Dunkel-Jackson

This course strengthened my understanding of informal and formal assessment methods for planning instruction and supporting students with mild disabilities. I explored strategies for evaluating student progress, making data-driven decisions, and determining appropriate placements. Emphasis was placed on engaging families to enhance the responsiveness and effectiveness of assessments. Through this, I developed skills to use assessments not only for classification but also as tools to improve learning outcomes and foster collaboration between educators and families.

Spring 2024

CEP 802A Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Special Education I: Mild Impairment

Sarah Cox

This course provided a strong foundation in research, problem-solving, and special education. I explored research methodologies for teaching students with learning impairments, analyzed systemic challenges in special education, and studied assessment methods in math education. Through these experiences, I developed skills to evaluate instructional strategies, apply evidence-based practices, and advocate for meaningful change in teaching and learning.

CEP 804A: Literacy Instruction for Students with Mild Disabilities

Troy Mariage

This course focused on assessing and implementing reading and writing interventions for students with literacy difficulties. I explored methods for observing and measuring literacy performance, designing targeted interventions, and implementing evidence-based strategies to support phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Emphasis was placed on developing self-regulated reading and writing strategies and using progress monitoring to track student growth. The coursework reinforced the impact of literacy challenges on overall academic performance and provided practical approaches for improving student outcomes. Through this, I gained the skills to create responsive, data-driven literacy instruction that fosters mastery and engagement.

Summer 2024

CEP 810: Teaching for Understanding with Technology

Chris Sloan

This course explored effective ways to integrate technology into classroom instruction. I examined various digital tools, collaborated with peers to discover new resources, and applied them in projects and presentations. A key focus was evaluating the strengths and limitations of each tool to make informed decisions about their classroom use. One highlight was my Team Teaching project, where a peer and I designed and delivered a mini-lesson using an unfamiliar online platform, reinforcing the importance of adaptability and thoughtful technology integration in education.

CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technologies to Educaiton

Chris Sloan

This course expanded my understanding of technology in education beyond digital tools. While exploring online resources to enhance student learning, we also focused on integrating hands-on, interactive technologies to create meaningful, multi-sensory experiences. This course challenged me to see technology as anything that fosters creativity, engagement, and deeper learning—not just what’s found on a screen. A key project that demonstrated this was my Maker’s Project, where I designed a tactile learning activity to help students grasp plant parts and life cycle through hands-on exploration.

CEP 812: Applying Educational Technology to Issues of Practice

Chris Sloan

This course delved deeper into the effective use of technology in education. We not only built on our existing knowledge of tech integration but also explored how technology could be used to address complex challenges in education. Through an equity-driven lens, we examined "Wicked Problems"—persistent, seemingly unsolvable issues—and brainstormed potential solutions, acknowledging that some problems may never have clear answers. For my Wicked Problem presentation, I collaborated with a peer to propose possible solutions to the issue of Creating Equity in Title 1 Schools by Addressing Achievement Gaps.

Fall 2024

CEP 818: Creativity in Teaching and Learning

Candace Robertson

This course focused on the value and relevance of creativity in education, exploring how creativity can be recognized, analyzed, and supported in various contexts. I examined psychological, motivational, and organizational factors that influence creativity in learners. The coursework emphasized strategies for fostering creativity in the classroom and understanding its role in promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By the end of the course, I gained insights into the importance of nurturing creativity to enhance student engagement and academic success.

CEP 822: Approaches to Educational Research

Cary Roseth

This course focused on alternative methods of educational research, including how to identify researchable problems and develop a research proposal. I explored various research designs and methodologies, with an emphasis on applying descriptive and inferential statistics to analyze and critique published studies. Through hands-on experience, I learned to assess the strengths and limitations of different research approaches and develop a well-structured proposal for educational research. This course enhanced my ability to critically evaluate existing studies and contribute to the field of educational research with evidence-based insights.

Spring 2025

CEP 800: Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings

Zach Rondot

I explored various schools of thought about learning through a virtual "Museum of Learning." The course was structured around different wings and galleries dedicated to key learning theories. I examined behaviorism, cognitivism, social learning theories, and critical theories, including topics like classical conditioning, constructivism, Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Additionally, I explored learning beyond the classroom, focusing on out-of-school learning experiences, and studied adult learning theories like andragogy and experiential learning. By the end of the course, I was able to evaluate six primary theories of learning, create my own learning theory, and apply my beliefs to enhance learning opportunities for my students.

CEP 807: Capstone Seminar

For my program's final evaluation, I created an online portfolio (What you're currently viewing!) that summarizes my work throughout the program. This portfolio includes reflections, writings, and a showcase of my best work, all personalized with elements I chose. The course emphasized the value of iteration, providing formative feedback from peers and instructors to guide improvement. I also presented my portfolio in small groups, where it was evaluated by MAET faculty and course instructors. This process allowed me to demonstrate my competence in using technology to support teaching and learning while presenting my work clearly and professionally.
