Classroom Expectations

Classroom Expectations

Each student is expected to consistently display appropriate behavior during rehearsals, performances, and school related activities. ALL SCHOOL RULES APPLY IN ALL MUSIC ACTIVITIES. School hall pass rules also apply in rehearsals.

  1. DISCARD ALL GUM, FOOD AND DRINK BEFORE ENTERING THE MUSIC SUITE.

We have been entrusted with beautiful facilities in which to sing, learn, and perform. In an effort to keep things neat and new, please bring only pure bottled water into the music suite.

  1. BE ON TIME AND PREPARED FOR REHEARSAL.

You will be assigned music and a slot to store it. When you enter the classroom, quickly grab these materials and A PENCIL, proceed to your seat and read the board for further instructions. If you must bring a backpack to class, please store it in the hallway outside the classroom.

  1. BE RESPECTFUL OF EACH OTHER AND OF OUR SPACE.

A positive attitude and effort is vital to the success of rehearsals and performances. We are a community of learners and it is expected that we will work together to reach our goals.

  1. USE GOOD REHEARSAL TECHNIQUE.

Stay focused during rehearsals and refrain from talking with others. Talking during rehearsal distracts and disturbs the concentration of all of us. You may be permitted to talk at certain times throughout the rehearsal. Please save your conversations for these moments.

  1. STRIVE TO USE YOUR BEST VOCAL TECHNIQUE.

Proper singing posture is expected when sitting or standing. We all want to sing efficiently in order to produce the best sounds and to maintain our vocal health. Discover how posture and other techniques can allow you to sing freely with the least amount of effort.

Attendance Policies

Students are expected to attend class on time each day.

  1. Choir is a participation course. We depend on one another to learn the music, become better musicians, and perform to the best of our abilities. Therefore, attendance in rehearsal is crucial.
  2. If you are absent, check the board for, and complete any assignments that were completed in class when you were away. Ask a friend first for help. If you still have questions, you are welcome to ask me at the end of the period or at your lesson.
  3. You will be held responsible for the information that you missed through performance assessments, sight singing assessments, and quizzes.
  4. Unexcused Tardiness will be dealt with as follows:

i. First tardy results in verbal warning

ii. Second tardy results in a 10 minute detention in the choir room.

iii. Third tardy results in a referral and a 30 minute detention.

iv. Future tardies result in 30 minute detentions.

Students will participate in all performances that involve the choir.

    1. Pre-excused absences from a performance will be dealt with on an individual basis and require at least two weeks notice.
    2. Emergency circumstances, such as illness or family emergency, will be dealt with on an individual basis. Please try to notify Ms. Petroff if an emergency arises that prohibits you from attending a performance.
    3. Excused absences from a performance will require a make-up assignment to be arranged with Ms. Petroff before the concert or immediately upon return after an emergency absence.
