Go to Setting on your home screen....
Then go to iCloud, and tap Backup...
Tap Back Up Now.....
Your iPad should now be backing up to the iCloud.
*If not, and you get a message stating there's not enough storage available, please see the page titled Storage - iCloud to walk through how to fix this.
Note: Some apps don't save documents/projects to the iCloud and you will lose them if you don't back them up a different way. Please see the page Specific App Backups
