WATERFORD, CT – Waterford Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Patrick Dougherty as the new head football coach of the Waterford High School Lancers.
Mr. Dougherty brings a strong foundation as an educator and coach, with experience across middle school, high school, and collegiate athletics. Most recently, he served as a health and physical education teacher in the New Haven Public Schools and held coaching roles at the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity levels, most recently serving as an assistant coach for the 2025-2026 State Champion Berlin High School football team. Dougherty’s coaching pedigree includes a tenure at Wesleyan University, where he contributed to strategic practice planning and recruitment. He is also recognized for his analytical expertise as a former professional video scout, where he analyzed NCAA and NFL game data and contributed to professional scouting reports.
"What stood out to me about Patrick was his character, his energy, and his genuine passion for teaching and leading young people," said Kirk Samuelson, Principal of Waterford High School. "He is a skilled educator and a positive presence who naturally creates the atmosphere, culture, and image we want our football program to represent. We are excited to welcome him to the Lancer community and are confident in his ability to lead with integrity, purpose, and vision."
Mr. Dougherty holds a degree in Health and Physical Education from the University of Rhode Island and is currently completing a Master’s degree in Health and Wellness. Beyond his tactical knowledge, he has a proven record of increasing student participation and fostering inclusive environments, qualities that earned him high praise from Wesleyan University Head Coach Dan DiCenzo, who noted that Coach Dougherty "does what is right and does not take the easy way out. Pat will be a great asset to the school. He has a great understanding of the game and the ability to inspire his athletes."
Director of Athletics and Student Activities Chris Landry expressed similar enthusiasm, noting that Coach Dougherty’s vision and attention to detail set him apart during the search. "He is structured, calm, and maintains high expectations," Landry said. "We are excited for him to begin building the next chapter of Lancer football."
In a statement regarding his appointment, Coach Dougherty shared his excitement for the future: “I am thrilled to join the Waterford community as the head football coach. I want to thank Athletic Director Chris Landry, Principal Kirk Samuelson, and Superintendent Thomas Giard for this opportunity. I am eager to begin working with our student-athletes and coaches as we build a program the community will be proud of.”
Coach Dougherty will begin his tenure immediately, focusing on assembling a strong coaching staff, implementing a comprehensive offseason training plan, and setting the standard for a championship culture that reflects the values and expectations of Waterford High School.
