2025 Local Scholarships
This is the first round of local scholarships that are now open. We will send more opportunities as they become available. They will be released in THREE batches based on due dates. Please contact Ms. Catherine House, Counselor and Scholarship Coordinator, and your individual caseload counselor (see below If you are unsure of who your counselor is) if you should have any more specific questions about a particular scholarship.

***If you need an unoffical copy of your ACT Score Report to upload as part of your scholarship application please send an email to Ms. Lee with your name and request.
***All applications are due at 11:59pm on the date listed, unless otherwise noted.

Harry W. Clarke Memorial Scholarship Programs - Harry W. Clarke Award
Scholarship Value: $2000, renewable for 3 more years
Number of scholarships available: 1
Scholarship may be awarded to one student from any public high school in the 29-county Western North Carolina region to attend a 4-year college or university. In addition, students with permanent homes with the 29-county WNC region who attend the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the UNC School of the Arts High School, or a Home School registered with the NC Department of Non-Public Education may apply if they will attend an accredited US four-year college or university. Scholarship Value: $1000, renewable for 3 more years
Number of scholarships available: 1

Scholarship will be given to an alumni of Green Valley School. The application for this scholarship is an essay.

SECU “People Helping People” Scholarship Program
Scholarship Value: $10,000
Number of scholarships available: 2
Only for students who are members of SECU or their parents are members. Financial need demonstrated, 2.5 or higher GPA. Can only be used at one of the 16 UNC system schools. Students must demonstrate character, integrity, and community involvement. More details here.

Follow all the steps laid out in the Google Doc. You will go through a Membership Verification Form. After you received a confirmation saying you meet the membership eligibility requirement, you will receive an email with the People Helping People application.
You first fill out a consent form. Once that is completed you will fill out the application.
Once you have completed your application you will receive an email with the full completed application. Either print out the application or save it as a pdf and share it with Ms. Catherine House in Student Services.
WCAE/NCAE Scholarship
Scholarship Value: $750
Number of scholarships available: 2
Two scholarships will be offered: 1. A $750 scholarship to a WCAE member's child (with priority given to a member's child pursuing an education degree) 2. A $750 scholarship given to a senior pursuing a degree in the education field

Margaret Gragg Education Scholarship

For students who are female graduating seniors who have resided in Watauga County for at least one year, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, demonstrate financial need, and wish to attend an institution of higher learning to pursue an education major (or teacher certification).

This scholarship is for a graduating senior who plans to pursue an advanced degree in elementary education at a qualified college, community college, or university. Preference is given to a student planning to attend Appalachian State. Financial need may be taken into consideration.

Don and Audrey Bentley Scholarship
Scholarship Value: $20,000 per year, renewable for 3 years
Number of scholarships available: 1
A Watauga High School senior who exhibits academic excellence, leadership, personal effort and good citizenship; preference will be given to individuals who want to pursue a major in Environmental Sciences or a major in Education. Financial need will be considered as a criterion if there are equally matched applicants, with the student with greater need being awarded the scholarship in that case. Final decisions are at the full discretion of the Committee. More information is available here.

Students from North Carolina planning to study at the undergraduate or graduate level at Virginia Tech are eligible, with a preference given to a student from Watauga County. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who exhibits academic excellence, leadership, personal effort and good citizenship. Financial need will be considered if there are equally matched applicants, with the student with greater need being awarded the scholarship. More information is available here.

Applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent; be an employee of the Mast General Store or the son/daughter/stepson/stepdaughter of a Mast General store employee; maintain a "C" average in high school, community college or junior college of a four-year institution; and show proof of acceptance to a community college, junior college, or a four year institution.

North Carolina Community Foundation Disaster Relief and Resilience Scholarship

This fund is set up to provide support for residents of western North Carolina counties whose ability to pay for college or university was impacted by Hurricane Helene.
This fund is open to undergraduate students attending two- or four- year colleges.

Cody Blue Pilkington Scholarship Fund

This fund is set up for freshmen attending NC State University who are studying engineering, science or math.
Applicants must be involved in a community service organization (preferably 2), are non-smokers and substance-free, and maintain a 2.8 GPA.

This is for students who plan to use their knowledge of the Spanish language to help serve their community. The applicants need to have completed at least 3 Spanish courses in order to apply.
