Matter and Energy

Absent students-

Look below or go to the assignment description on Unified Classroom (Powerschool) for make up assignments that will sometimes be available. There is no way for students to gain the knowledge and experiences that they miss when absent. Many activities are hands-on and experiential due to the new science standards and curriculum.

December 17-19: Engineer a 3-D card (see slide in 6.2.4 below for 12/17). I have attached the beginning of the worksheet below https://drive.google.com/open?id=0By8wqUz4xL7dZkxoWHc2LWxHLUluV0dpUUpMSmEtZkJZQ3Bn. We will continue it on Tuesday, as well as correcting the 6.2.3 & 6.2.4 packet and journal pages. Wednesday, students will go directly to the Little Theater. Have a happy holiday break.

6.2.4 Pay

December 10-14: We are finishing up our investigation on 6.2.3 today, so you'll find the makeup work on the slides from last week (in 12/3-12/7). Tuesday, we will learn about insulators and conductors of thermal energy. On Wednesday, we'll continue our introduction to engineering design. Thursday and Friday, we will work in groups to engineer and build a method of keeping liquid warm over time. There will be no makeup for this activity, so please make every effort to be at school. We will continue our engineering unit next week as we learn about improving our initial designs. Journals will be graded soon, so make sure that you are caught up. Be sure to check power school for missing assignments or low test grades. If you want to retake our last test, be sure to arrange for a time THIS WEEK.

Week of 12/3-12/7: All posters from last Friday are due tomorrow and fixed packets from last Thursday are due Wednesday. Make sure all corrections to 6.2.3 & 6.2.4 packet page four are completed by Wednesday.

Monday was a busy day. Bellwork was to complete and grade page four of the new packet. We also used the Variables and Constants powerpoint to complete page five, and finished page six on dependent and independent variables together as a class. Make sure that you have signed up for Thunderbolt Time by TODAY if you haven't yet. Tuesday, we completed an investigation on thermal energy and temperature. Wednesday, bellwork is page 65 in the textbook (and the yellow 1/2 sheet notes). We will be reviewing for the test (two pages). Thursday is the test for 6.2.2 and 6.2.3. Friday we are learning the basics of engineering and completing a Mystery Science episode.

November 26-30

Monday's assignment is on slides 2-3 of the slideshow below. On Tuesday, we completed the Thermal Energy paper (orange) from Monday. The links are on slide 5 below. Students also had to go to Readworks.org and complete the article. Directions are on slide 4 below. Wednesday, we will be using the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning process to write about states of matter, as well as finishing the circles and arrow phase change half sheet. We completed our packets as well. Make sure that you draw the models on the front page of the packet (I can statements). Thursday we will be learning about expansion and contraction. Bellwork is the Phases of Matter doodle notes. Read the slide for Thursday below for directions for the classwork. Friday we will be making individual posters for the three heat transfer types (conduction, convection and radiation).

November 19-20

We discussed the three types of thermal energy (heat) transfers today. Be sure to watch the videos in the slideshow below, especially the Eureka video on convection, conduction and radiation. The kids then watched short clips with examples of all three transfers and completed the worksheet below. Label the investigations for the different demonstrations (radiometer, ball and ring, etc.), list the type of transfer you think it is, then write a sentence telling the evidence you saw that showed the transfer. The Tuesday before Thanksgiving we will be seeing how these three thermal energy transfers work (and we'll be eating the evidence). Absent students on Tuesday will need to watch the Bill Nye video on Heat (on slide 8 below). Bring it to Mrs. Pay for correcting when done.

November 12-16:

Check PowerSchool and see if your child has retaken the planets test (6.2.1) if he/she had a low score. I have only had a couple of kids retake it so far. Students in interventions will have a retake handled during that session.

I have the been down with the flu all weekend and will be absent Monday. I should have known I didn't stand a chance of avoiding it when I had 15 students absent on Friday :/ (Update-I will be out on Thursday and Friday too--this flu is relentless and I am without a voice and feeling sorry for myself)

We are starting a new section of our matter unit. Students will complete a new packet over the next 1 1/2 weeks. You can find it below. The packet for 6.2.1 is due Monday (we will complete the first page together and grade it before collecting). Monday, we will also complete a foldable on the properties of the three main states of matter. The powerpoint to use with this can be found below, along with the foldable. Directions are at the end of the PPT. Tuesday, we will be discussing changes in those states of matter and diffusion. Wednesday and Thursday will be on density and energy. Will we wrap those up on Friday.

November 5-9: Beginning of trimester 2 (The only grade in trimester 2 so far is our last test, so don't worry if your child's grade is low). Interventions and retakes have not occurred yet)

We will complete our study of atoms and molecules this week. See the slides below (after Monday) for what is completed each day. Since we are covering so much every day, I will add to the slides daily as to what was actually finished. There will be a test on Friday. The review is below (especially Math Counts kids). Be sure to get stamped for homeroom on Monday or arrange for another time with Mrs. Pay ASAP.
