AVID Department - Course Overviews

What is AVID?   AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is a college- and career-readiness course that provides supports for success in school and prepares students for life beyond high school. Check out a virtual showcase to see AVID in action.  AVID courses count as elective credit and can be taken throughout grades 8-12.

AVID 9

The curriculum for 9th grade includes an introduction to AVID and Cornell notes. Students create binders, learn about effective tutorials, and practice test-taking strategies. They will work on goal setting and developing a four-year plan. Writing, reading, inquiry, organization, and collaboration are integral parts to this program.

The curriculum for 10th grade focuses on assessing individual skills and abilities. Students develop leadership and public-speaking skills. They will start the process of  researching colleges and careers and will complete a service-learning project. Writing, reading, inquiry, organization, and collaboration are integral parts to this program.

The curriculum for 11th grade expands upon the work done in 10th grade by updating portfolios and doing further research on college and careers. They will also assess individual skills and abilities and will match those skills and abilities to careers. Field trips to colleges help students figure out what to look for in a college. They will prepare for college entrance exams. Writing, reading, inquiry, organization, and collaboration are integral parts to this program.

*Concurrent Enrollment credit is available for students who enroll and successfully complete AVID 11 (MSU-Mankato's KSP 150: Exploring Careers in Education)

Students who have participated in AVID will be offered this opportunity as seniors.  The curriculum will include preparation for either a college or career plan. For college prep, students will complete college applications, research scholarship opportunities, prepare scholarship applications, complete college entrance exams, explore and prepare FAFSA documents. For career prep, students will prepare resumes, cover letters, and job applications. They will practice interview skills and participate in a job shadow experience. Life skills such as leadership skills, budgeting, and personal finance will also be taught. Writing, reading, inquiry, organization, and collaboration are integral parts to this program.
