Edgewood Middle School is successful in large part because of the tremendous collaboration and support of community businesses and individual experts who have given of their time, talent, and skills to students. The partnerships with Dalton Foundries, Paragon Medical, Depuy, Society of Women Engineers, Orthoworx and Zimmer Biomet have accelerated and helped us produce a rigorous and high-quality STEM curriculum and extra curricular activities.
Community engagement is important for Edgewood to showcase to students how their learning impacts others and to inspire them towards STEM careers. Every guest expert from the community has promoted their background and demonstrated to students that they can pursue careers in their respective fields. Students can see themselves in those STEM careers and witness women and minorities in these STEM roles. Community members have the opportunity to contribute to this learning by engaging in activities and STEM instruction to make learning authentic and provide opportunities to engage real-world problems. Extended learning continues to promote further opportunities to investigate more and pursue an interest in everything from chess to robotics. These clubs are open to all students and our transportation department for the district makes sure that this is not a hurdle for any student.
Community partners are critical in implementing STEM in our curriculum. Several local business partners work with our core team to brainstorm ways to include STEM in our curriculum and ways for our partners to support our students.
Partnerships
Paragon Medical is a strong supporter of EMS. Several employees currently volunteer for the GoBabyGo program. This company has provided many opportunities for our students to tour the plant and have shown our students about STEM careers.
WCHS Army JROTC supports EMS in earning STEM certification. The Army JROTC has a robotics program at the high school level. Some of our STEM students have joined the JROTC robotics teams.
