Q: Why do luxury vinyl plank locking joints fail after installation?
Luxury vinyl plank locking joints usually fail because of installation conditions, not because the locking system itself is defective. The most common causes are uneven subfloors, lack of proper expansion space, heavy fixed loads, and temperature swings that restrict natural movement. When planks cannot float freely, stress concentrates at the joints and they eventually separate or break.
LVP is designed as a floating floor, which means it must move slightly as temperatures and conditions change. When the subfloor is not flat enough, vertical flex occurs under foot traffic and the locking edges take repeated stress. Over time, this weakens the joint and causes gaps or cracking.
Another frequent cause is expansion restriction. Tight installs against walls, cabinets, islands, or heavy fixtures prevent the floor from moving. Seasonal expansion then forces pressure into the locking system instead of dispersing across the floor. Improper acclimation and installing in spaces that exceed manufacturer size limits without transitions can accelerate this issue.
Joint damage can also occur during installation. Excessive force, tapping blocks used incorrectly, or debris left in the joint channels prevents full engagement. Once compromised, the joint may look fine initially but fail months later under normal use.
We see this often with Lexington-area homes where older slabs have subtle dips or crowns. Customers bring in planks thinking the lock failed, but after talking through the install we usually find the floor was pinned under kitchen cabinets or installed over an uneven concrete slab. In several cases, correcting the subfloor and reinstalling with proper expansion space solved the problem without changing the product.
