Q: Is luxury vinyl plank really waterproof?Â
Luxury vinyl plank is waterproof at the material level, but the floor system itself is not automatically waterproof once installed. The vinyl and SPC core will not swell from water exposure, but moisture can still reach the subfloor through seams, edges, or perimeter gaps if spills are not addressed promptly or if installation details are missed.
LVP planks are made from waterproof materials, which means standing water will not damage the plank itself the way wood or laminate can. This makes LVP well-suited for kitchens, basements, bathrooms, and rental properties where spills are common.
What waterproof does not mean is flood-proof. Water can migrate through joints, around walls, or under baseboards and become trapped beneath the floor. When that happens, issues usually show up in the subfloor, adhesive materials nearby, or through mold and odor rather than damage to the planks themselves. Proper underlayment selection, perimeter sealing where appropriate, and realistic expectations matter.
Manufacturers also distinguish between residential water resistance and commercial moisture exposure. Long-term standing water, plumbing failures, or slab moisture issues still require remediation even when LVP is used.
We’ve had Lexington customers replace laminate after minor appliance leaks and switch to LVP with much better results. In a few cases after basement water events, the planks were reusable but the subfloor needed drying and cleanup. The takeaway we share is simple: LVP handles everyday water extremely well, but it does not eliminate the need for good installation practices or basic moisture management.
