Q: What is the difference between vinyl plank and luxury vinyl plank?
The main difference between vinyl plank and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is build quality and performance. “Vinyl plank” is a broad term that can include thinner, lower-cost products, while luxury vinyl plank refers to higher-quality vinyl flooring with thicker wear layers, more realistic visuals, and stronger core construction designed for long-term durability.
Vinyl plank is an umbrella term that covers many types of vinyl flooring made in plank form. This can include entry-level products with thin wear layers, flexible cores, and limited durability. These are often intended for light use or short-term applications.
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is a subset of vinyl plank that meets higher performance standards. LVP typically includes a thicker wear layer for scratch resistance, a multi-layer construction for stability, and a rigid core (commonly SPC or WPC) that helps the floor perform better over concrete slabs and through temperature changes. LVP is also designed to more accurately replicate the look and texture of real hardwood through advanced printing and embossing techniques. Industry testing and performance standards are commonly evaluated under ASTM guidelines (astm.org).
We often see this confusion when customers come in with a box or sample they picked up elsewhere and ask why the price difference exists. One customer in Lexington brought in vinyl plank they had already purchased for a basement remodel and wanted a second opinion before installing it. They had a very thin wear layer (12mil) and was laminate, it was clear it wasn’t designed for potentially wet conditions or long-term use. They decided to return it and switch to a true luxury vinyl plank instead.
We’ve also heard from installers who get called back months later to fix issues like separating seams or shifting planks, almost always on lower-end vinyl plank, not properly built LVP. Those real-world failures are why we draw a clear line between basic vinyl plank and luxury vinyl plank when helping customers choose flooring that’s meant to last.
