Art and Design

The Art exam board AQA uses four assessment objectives to mark students work; developing ideas, refining your work, recording your ideas and finally presenting a meaningful response. Here are three sketchbook pages as examples of how work is assessed:

Grade 3

This sketchbook page shows a moderate ability to effectively develop, refine and record ideas through purposeful investigations. The page shows a ability to competently present a personal and meaningful response and realise intentions.

Grade 5

With more detailed annotations and experimentation this sketchbook page displays a consistent ability to demonstrate critical understanding of sources. With a consistent ability to effectively select and purposefully experiment with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes. It shows a consistent ability to understand visual language.

Grade 7

Through the use of insightful annotations this sketchbook page shows a highly evolved ability to both effectively develop ideas through creative and purposeful investigations but also thoughtfully refine ideas.

The use of various art media and photography shows a highly developed ability to skilfully record ideas though observations and insights with drawing and annotation. This includes any other appropriate means relevant to intentions, as work progresses. The finished page shows an exceptional ability to demonstrate understanding of visual language.
